Years ago while I was working I earned 3 million miles with Delta, 1 million miles with American, many free trips with Southwest and tons of Marriott Rewards and Hilton Honors Points. I was way ahead of my time fearing devaluation so I made made a conscious effort to use them. I used them on family vacations and things like sending my Son to Marriott's Golf Academy. When I retired I still had a bunch but within about 2 years they were all gone. No regrets...

George, I really feel you are ahead of the game as you sold you Marriott TS before it dropped a lot in value.

I'm with you use up loyalty points as soon as they are worth something as you never know when they will change the program. I don't fly that much but get credit card points and airmiles (a Canadian points system) and whenever possible I trade them in. Years ago we lost points on an airline program since there hadn't been any activity in the account for a while so they closed it down. You know the saying A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

we've use ours liberally--flying family of 6 to Europe 4X(always using cheapest rewards). I'm glad we didn't stockpile for retirement travel. Now focusing of driving trips for 2020 into 2021.
Hotel points system are very devalued already. I use Marriott for cheaper places, and still like the "free" certificates for having a CC. Can't see paying 50K Hilton points to stay at a Hampton Inn!

I saw this coming years ago. I flew twice every year to UK and Europe in business class for years after retiring. Still have 600000 AMEX Reward points that can be used for other than travel, even if it’s not a super value, or transferred. Down to 300000 Airline points that will be used up this year or next.

There are a few good redemptions around if you look long enough and have flexibility.

Cheers
