The sad part is that some people will take advantage of these low prices and then come back and infect other people

I am not a mega ship cruiser. I enjoy small sailboats like Tradewinds and small ships like Windstar. However, I think many people are eager to get back to traveling and this will be attractive for many people. Hopefully, they put some good safety protocols in place. We need to remember that of all the cruise ships that were sailing, less than a handful had problems with the coronavirus.

We are looking forward to "home port specials" sailing from San Diego. I'm kinda figuring the ships will be as clean as they've ever been.

My wife and I might do it. As you all know, wife, a caretaker with covid patients (of whom one died), and I had covid, which really sucked. We have our doctors’ slips and are looking to travel. We were the second And third tuggers to report such.

Carnival knows their clientele. The young, upwardly mobile with disposable income who value a 'Spring Break' type atmosphere. Bars, discos, pool-side games will (pun intended) keep them afloat. Carnival doesn't aim to attract TUGgers.

It's going to take a while for the traditional 'near-luxury' cruise to regain the confidence of older-well heeled travelers. It's going to take a vaccine to get me onto one of these- and it certainly WON'T be on Carnival.

Short of another similar epidemic, cruise lines are going to have to offer rock bottom prices for a long time to rebuild customer loyalty.
At the same time, cruise lines were the original source of adding on charges for every little thing you get or do. I bet these low fares are going to be offset with more sneaky (and unnecessary) charges. For the sake of the economy, I'm glad they are trying something to get back in the game, but this is not for us.

For those who enjoy cruising, I wish you safe and sanitary travels!

If we ever get antibody testing, and turn out to have had it, we'll resume traveling quickly. We love to cruise, but unfortunately we won't be able to sail again until our chances of being stuck away from home are close to nil. If it turns out that a positive antibody test will exempt people from forced quarantine in the (probably inevitable) event of another 'plague ship' then we'd sail happily.

Hopefully, they put some good safety protocols in place.

I think it is noteworthy that the spread generally came from the onboard staff, not the paying passengers.

I dislike cruising anyway b/c DW and I hate we can't leave our cabin 20 feet without the CabinS heading into our 'little closet' to rearrange things. And after this, I would sure as heck want a 'lock' to keep them out!

What do folks think about the smaller river cruises? Same issues? When would you feel "safe" to start going on that type of cruise again?

You paid the price and are now in a good position to do this. Could it end up like one of the Princess Cruises, stuck at sea because others fall ill?

Before you book, IMO, I feel they are all inside cabins; or they are cabins that have obstructed views. Please check before you book your cabin.

My issue / concern isn’t about my safety but being stuck on a boat that I can’t get off from (or worse , stuck in my cabin ) bc no one will allow the ship to port. It’s honestly my idea of a living hell.

Exactly my concern in the medium term. For my part, the only leisure travel I will consider until my other half and I have been infected and recover is boondock camping. Once I know we've had it, my concern will be entirely about the possibility of forced quarantine until some system exempting recovered folks from the process is developed. That will, at a minimum, require higher levels of certainty regarding conferred immunity than we have now. Till then, they could give away cruises and we'd stay on land.

Don't see it talked about much, but there's an estimated 80,000 crew members currently stuck at sea, because the cruise lines have not reached an agreement with the CDC for plans to repatriate them. From what I can gather, the issue is, who should pay for these people to return to their home country. 80,000 people stuck at sea. That's unimaginable to me.

Count me in for "no thanks". Heck, I don't even think I would have taken advantage of this on Carnival pre Covid!

Why does this involve the CDC? Foreign ships, mostly foreign crew. Are they trying to send foreign crewmembers here?
