Hello fellow Tuggers,

Typically we travel without renting a car. So I'm inexperienced I the world of car rentals. However, we're heading to Arizona this summer for a week and a half and will need to rent a car. Looking for advice on getting the best rental deal and any pertinent info anyone can share.

Thanks,
Rob

The best advice is to book the best rate you can NOW, then continue to watch prices. If something cheaper comes up later, you can book the new rate and cancel your prior reservation. Just don't book a rate now that can't be cancelled or is a prepaid rate. Coscto is a great place to search for and compare rates. Then have AutoSlash track your Costco rate.

I use carrentals.com. You don't have to pay anything up front and you can cancel if you find something better with no problem.

If you are flying in to Phoenix its cheaper to rent offsite, the airport taxes there are very high.

+1 on this. ALL PHX car rentals are heavily taxed to pay for sports stadiums etc. There have been threads about this very subject. TUG Search is your friend.

I used a Budget site in Tempe. Call them and pre-arrange. The only snag is the car had to be picked up during business hours. Returning it to the airport was no problem.

We have used off site places and I absolutely hate it. Some of them were in bad areas. The service was slow. Sometimes no one was even there. I don't remember what we did when we went to Phoenix, but I do know that from now on we always rent a car at the airport- just more convenient and better service in my opinion.

If you're flying into PHX check out Silvercar. It's not typically the cheapest but all they rent is new Audi A4's. It's a phone app model so all you need is your smartphone.
