TUGers, you helped me with a used car purchase for my 24 years old daughter back in September. Maybe some of you can suggest how to insure this car “for less”. Since I purchased this car in CO I had it attached to our existing insurance. I drove the car to Minnesota, added my daughter’s name on car Title and registered it in MN. Car insurance renewal will come in March. Should I do nothing and automatically renew here in CO (for less) or do we have to purchase new policy in MN for much more ... and why? Thanks in advance.

Per information I found by using Google car needs to be insured in the same state where it is registered and where the owner resides.

Agree with Luanne as above.

In the event of a claim it probably would be disallowed given the present situation.

Also, if I remember correctly when our older dd moved out we had to remove her from our family policy and she had to get her own. It could have been because she changed addresses.

If I read the OP correctly, BOTH Krteczech and daughter are listed on the title - is that correct?
That means BOTH are owners and each lives in a different state - correct?
I'd suggest a conversation with competing insurance agents, spell out this situation and allow them to give a quote. Make sure this situation is specifically acknowledged on the coverage then make your decision armed with that knowledge.

He also said the car is registered in the state where his daughter resides. That may take precedence over the dual owner thing. But I do agree, talking to an insurance agent in both states would help.

Thanks for all replies, I am going to turn my question to insurance agents in both states.
The cost difference between metropolis and small town is astonishing and I am the one who will be ultimately responsible for payments. ..just trying to safe few (hundreds) for my next vacation..

We live in NJ and daughter goes to college in PA. We recently switched to Geico and they split the PA car off onto a separate policy with Geico Pennsylania. My husband and I still own the car and the paperwork comes to our daughter under our names at her school address. This saved a LOT.

I would be upfront with your insurance company and let them tell you the best way to handle this. We always had to tell our insurance companies if there were any changes with any of the cars, including things like "kid at college more than 100 miles away with no car," "commute went from 6 miles to 50 miles one-way," everything. If your rate goes up, try calling different companies and letting them tell you costs.

Our car insurance specifically asks the location where the vehicle is garaged ( as in it's homebase) and that is where the rates are based off of

My name is still on my DS’s title (due to a 0% loan) but he has his own separate policy now. He’s 25 and graduated last spring and lives in a different city. Talking to the insurance rep helped me figure out the best course of action.
