Can't use rescued points at Hilton Club New York - what now?

I carried forward my 7,000 points at the Hilton Club from last year as a (former!) friend said that he was going to stay there this summer, and would pay the maintenance fees plus a little extra to cover the capital costs.

However, he then backed out.

We've already got our family holiday planned in South Africa (so no HGVC properties!) and the only other time that I may go to New York there is no availability.

Am I right in thinking that you can't convert rescued points to HHonors points? Is there anything else I can do with them? As it isn't a particular week or unit size I've got I'm not sure how I could "sell" them through E-bay or somewhere like that.....

Any help or suggestions gratefully received.

My understanding is you can deposit rescue proints into RCI for a fee, and get one more year before expiration out of them. But with RCI, you will be pretty much trading down and also paying an exchange fee. But at least the points gets used. I find HGVC points works very good for DVC, and is good value, if Orlando or Disney works for you.

Also, my understanding, convert into HHonors points is pretty bad conversion rate, so I would just deposit into RCI at first.

Hopefully others will chime in with other help and suggestion.

You cannot convert to Hhonors now unless you are the highest level elite. One of the benefits of the highest tier of elite is that you can convert to hhonors at any time.

You could book a week and deposit it into SFX or another exchange company. I only suggest SFX because you will have very good trading power in there. Of course, you can deposit points into RCI as mentioned by above poster.

You aren't supposed to sell/rent out your points, but I doubt anyone would notice if you did. You could place an ad in the marketplace, but the year is half over and you will be the one needing to check for availability everywhere. If you can book a week at your home resort, you are able to rent that out. You'd want to advertise that here, on redweek and craigslist and maybe some other places, too.

I thought I read here on TUG that one option you could do is to actually book a Hotel reservation and convert current year points Hhonors to cover the reservation.... then a week or so later, just cancel the Hotel reservation and the Hhonors points used for the reservation will just go back into the Hhonors account and not back to the HGVC account. The conversion rate is lower that planning ahead, but it is a back door way to convert current year points. I may have this wrong, but thought it could be done that way....

RCI has Hilton NY properties.

You could book that way after you deposit your points.

You can make a current year hotel reservation using current year points but you will only get a 25-1 conversion ratio vs if you do it for the year in advance you will get a 50-1 ratio.
