Just FYI, they removed the VCR units in our room today and replaced it with a DVD player. I assume this will be universal with all Royal Units but that is the latest as of today. Beach is still ok, you can get down there and enjoy the sand. Pools are great.

And to think that I just bought a portable DVD player last year so we could watch DVDs in the villa. I guess we can still use it on the plane. :)

Thanks for the update

What we bought, and what we got...

Has anybody ever noticed the difference between what we bought, and what we got, at the Royal Resorts? It seems to be nothing but pleasant surprises.

I bought at Vacation Clubs in 1977. There wasn't any television in Can Cun then. Later, TV was scarce, we could rent a T.V. The kitchen had a stove but not a microwave...

Now, we have a stove and also a microwave oven in the kitchen, we have a dishwasher, a television in every bedroom and in the living room, Murphy beds in the living room, a new and nicer lobby...

Plus, now I also have 4 other resorts that I can go to on the other side of the island to the beach there, or to the nice restaurants and swimming pools, and the Spa.

And I bought at Royal Mayan in 1985... besides new appliances, we also have more elevators, a Gazebo, nicer gardens, ramps and changes made for persons on wheel chair, an elevator to the lobby, a nicer lobby... etc.

Besides being able to go to all other 4 clubs, we will soon have another club in Playa del Carmen to which we can go to for a day trip, or to their swimming pools and restaurants.

My membership in a simple timeshare has turned into a super-membership.

Isn't it great? Read the posts about the Royal Sunset, or the Grand Mayan, or even about Disney Vacation Clubs and other "5 Star resorts," and see the difference with how they treat their members and exchange visitors... You come to realize we are in a class of our own. There is nothing like this, anywhere.

Do you know anybody who regrets having bought at any of the Royal Resorts? I have bought 5 weeks more, based on my own good experience, after I bought my original 2 weeks in 1977.

Ellis, I couldn't agree with you more. In a taxi this week the driver says to me "you are staying with the best company in Cancun" I just said "Yes, your right"

If you get the opportunity, could you try to find out what The Sands projected timeframe for converting all units to DVD players is? Also, do you know if they are planning on doing the same for the Tri-Royals?

Thanks for spending valuable vacation time keeping us updated on Cancun and the Royal Resorts.

I just spoke with a Royal Sands employee and she said that all units will be converted with DVD players. I asked if the Tri Royals will be included and she said yes. They always keep all of the resorts similar and as upgraded as possible.

Thanks for the update. And of course I agree. Never anything but happy being a Royal Resort owner. Ever try to share ownership experiences with friends or co-workers? They just don't get it that we have something different!

DVD & TV's

I just spent week 4 at the Royal Mayan, had new DVD when I arrived, then new Sony WVEG flat screen TV on Wednesday. Am at the Sands for week 5.

Beach was small on Sunday, about 15 feet at Islander south end to about 35 feet at the Mayan end, and then dropped off about three feet with plenty of rocks. By Wednesday beach was completely back as before, but by Friday is was back to Sunday's size.

Beach restoration project began on Monday 1-30-06 at the Crown Paradise Club just south of the public beach south of the Hilton. The boat is dredging sand somewhere north of Cancun then pumping it through a pipline to shore where small dozers are spreading it. The boat is working around the clock, but appears it take about five hours to fill and then off load.

The Royals are in amazing shape, the Sands has never looked better, only the palm trees show evidence of missing leaves. The Tri-royals have erosion behind the seawall that is slowly getting filled in wheelborrow by wheelborrow. The landscaping also appears to have suffered more than the Sands. The Islander and Caribbean lobbies still have plastic over alot of missing windows, but that appears to be all. All of the Royals seem to be at capacity, but all the other resorts from the Hilton to the Sheraton appear to be in various stages of repair, except the Le Meridien which appears to be open. I walked the beach from the Mayan to the Marriott and could go no further on the beach, and the Marriott lets us walk through to the street. The Marriott said they would be opening in June, and based on what I saw there, I think alot of the others projected openings of late February and March are very optimistic.

Thanks Urban for your update. I am guessing they are putting those new Sony TVs in because they bought in bulk, as those are the TVS they have at the Royal Haciendas. Neat! Quick question - The screen size, do you rememebr what size it was? I am assuming larger than the ones they have now!

EQCM RFW: You are 100% correct, we are very lucky to have ownership in this great company. People just don't realize until they stay here. I'm sure there are other good ones too, but I'll probably never know. Cancun is in a rebuilding state, beaches are under construction and we will leave here Saturday after 3 weeks in Cancun and we feel we had yet another great vacation in Cancun.

The screen size is the same as the current Panasonic's. With the Murphy beds and entertainment center that is the only size that will fit. The Sony's are 21 inch, and have the stereo speakers on each side of the screen, so its doubtful the next size (27 inch) could fit.

Can you trade between the royals (weeks and Villas)? Or do you have to use your Villa and week?

You can put in an internal request through ISCO. If there is availability, cost is $99 per week.

I would prefer a DVD/VCR combo. The internal exchange through ISCO is a hit or miss proposition, you also have internal preference thru both II and RCI (tho RCI only trades within the Mayan and VCI).
