I have never considered doing this, therefore I don’t know if it’s possible...

We made a weeks reservation for 2021 and are now reconsidering our decision. We are still 8 months out from checkin and also, our election period for destination points has not yet closed on us. Can we cancel a weeks reservation, before the election period closes and take points instead?

Thanks for any input...

Yes, you should be able to. In the past, it took a call to MVCI. The website would let you do this (if you do online normally), but it wouldn't work. Just call MVCI and they will take care of it for you, it's a good idea IMHO.

I do this yearly, it normally does take a call but sometimes I've been able to do it by chat.

Yes, as has been said, you should be able to cancel your reservation and convert it to either Marriott Bonvoy Points (if your week is eligible) or Marriott Destination Club Points.

The only exception to this would be if you own a "lock off" week and have already locked it off. Once locked off it can't be put back together......

The advantage of the Bonvoy Points is that they are good forever as long as your account has activity once per year. The disadvantage of the Bonvoy Points is that they seem to purchase less and less as each year (such as devaluation --- more points per stay).
