I made a reservation at the Elysian for a week but found airfare was much cheaper if we flew back on Friday, figuring I could cancel that Friday night. I called to do that and they said that it was not possible. We would have to cancel the whole reservation and rebook and since there is no availability it was not advisable. I guess I don't understand why they can't just take one night off and give me back my points. I am spoiled with the flexibility of Disney. Has anyone else had this problem?

The VC at Wyndham was correct. I would NOT cancel and try to rebook for 6 nights, esp if the resort is booked out. Too many of the cancel and rebooks are vanishing .... being scooped up by some unknown entity who has accessed faster than any typist either at home or at their call centers.

Yes, DVC is different.

Agreed. I wouldn't take the chance of cancelling and rebooking. You'll be surprized to know that Wyndham's original points system was based off of DVC's. Somewhere along the line they lost the magic of Disney. I also like DVC's wait list feature.

Depending on the time of your flight, at least you won't have to be out of your room by check out time that day.

Also, if there is any way possible to not officially check out in person I would do this. I it is on the tip of my tongue what it is called, where you don't have to stand in line and officially check out. Since we frequently book one whole extra day on our vacations because we don't leave until 5-6 in the afternoon, I don't want Wyndham or DVC having access to that room because I know that they may rent it out. I also do this in case for some reason we end up not being able to get home and need to turn back. If we had officially checked out, we would not have the option of returning back to the hotel. This worked for us once when road flooding made us decide to turn back and stay another night.

As I read the post, I think the 0P's only concerns about checking out is getting a portion of her points returned to her account.

As I read the post, I think the 0P's only concerns about checking out is getting a portion of her points returned to her account.

And I think her question was answered. Should we just post "yes, they are correct." or "no, they are wrong."

I shared what we do because knowing Wyndham, if they have a unit empty, there is a good chance that they will rent that unit if they have the opportunity, even though someone else already paid for it. I think this is wrong. And it may be petty of me to keep that unit held up when we are usually done with it, but so be it. I did call Old Key West once. We had left and gotten far enough where I knew we weren't going to be turning back. A hurricane was coming in from somewhere, so I called and let them know the room was empty in case it was needed for those getting out of the hurricane's path.

It would be great if she could get her points back for the night. But since that is unlikely, I just wanted to share an option.

thank you everyone

Thank you everyone. Yes i was hoping to get the points back and use somewhere else but I have to learn that flexibility ike I have had in the Disney Vacation Club is not there for all other time shares. We are going the end of June and our flight is Friday morning at 9am so no worry about being out by check out time a day early. I have learned thru this post that since making a reservation by the week or day are the same points I may see if I can start making all of mine by the day then if this situation comes up again I should be okay. I am learning and hopefully in a few years I will be as versed in Wyndham as I am in my Disney from the past 17 years.

Most of the time you cant make reservations a day at a time in prime season, except for orphan days

The small print at the bottom of each points chart will give some insight...Also, if you are able to piece together a vacation, one day at a time, you are likely to get killed with housekeeping charges and transaction charges and guest fees (if you are making the reservation for a guest)...It will be cheaper to just lose the points, if you have to check out early

I guess you always have the trade off of which is costing you more. To lose the 20,000ish points and loss of a day of vacation vs the saving on airfare.
