It's a sad day. I just had to cancel our Fixed Week 22/23 in Maui. I called Owner Services and got my Accommodation Certificate. My week 23, I could have done a Short Notice Deposit instead of the AC. They were nice enough to place the certificates in my Destination Interval Account. The rep said that the Deposit might have more trading power than the AC. The AC is essentially a standard AC but with more options. I was debating between the two but went with the AC for my 2nd week because of the 120 day window. It's a little sad. $7,000 worth of MF's for 2 "super charged" AC's. Now to work on cancelling the airfare.

Would you have chosen the AC or the Short Notice Deposit?

Accommodation Certificate
  • 120 Day Window
  • Good till 12/16/2021
  • $99 Exchange fee

Short Notice Deposit
  • 59 Day window
  • Good till 6/30/2022
  • Normal fees apply ($209 Exchange Fee)

Does the AC have a grid with limited locations even within the 120 days?

The short notice deposit should also have had the marriott to Marriott discount fee of something around $170 for the exchange fee.

Steven,

I'm so sorry to hear this but you did the right thing. I am right there with you and expect to cancel my fixed weeks in the coming days. I already have an AC from my canceled Waiohai trip from April and it's much better than a normal AC, but it's weaker than a deposit. You will be able to get an decent exchange with it but it won't be a peak time exchange. I will use my AC to get a off-peak trade into Shadow Ridge so it will be useful for me. At least you get to do more vacation planning, which is one of my favorite hobbies!.

We will back to Maui soon and I hope the residents of Hawaii come through this ordeal that they are dealing with. The thought of long food bank lines is just stunning.

Best,

Greg

I couldn't remember the amount at the time but I think it's $154. I just paid that amount to book my Studio.

That's the debate I had with myself. AC vs. Deposit. While the AC is weaker, the 120 day window is a big plus. I think we're going to try and plan something for October since the kids have a Fall break as well. Who knows, maybe back to HHI or even Hawaii if things change.

As a positive, we are pivoting and will be spending a week up at Yellowstone during the first week of June to replace our Week 22. We have family that live just outside and it sounded like the Eastern part of Yellowstone is open. Should be nice cause there will be fewer visitors up there.

The extra half year on the short notice deposit could turn out to be an advantage depending on how things go.

Just a quick detour, but for Maui regulars you might consider donating your unused occupancy tax to the Maui Food Bank. They are a distribution point for a number of different points-of-contact services.

I went with longer deadline. Everyone with a week is going to be fighting over those bookings next year. Add that to those who could cancel normally or deposit normally since they assume they can't use this year.
But it is your choice.

I went with the AC. Had an extra Easter week exchange at MKO for family. Of course with resort amenities closed and stay at home order, the week would have gone unused. I called interval and got the AC certificate.

I was surprised that AC was able to pull a bunch of Marriott weeks during the summer. Used it to book a week at end of July for MKO. Thought it had way better power than a regular AC and showed a whole lot more.

Good luck Steven and have fun planning your next stay. See you at MKO when you visit again. Take care and stay safe.

Sorry to hear that. It hurts. We also had to cancel two HI weeks in April plus an extra DC pts reservation, at nearly a $6k loss. In return we also have the II ACs. While the money is disappointing, it is really the memories and much needed vacation that my family (and extended family we planned to bring) will miss the most. We are trying to look forward to a future vacation, just struggling to schedule it yet due to uncertainty of when and where to go. I’m hoping for a late summer vacation, if not fall. Fingers crossed.

Condolences to you both, Steven and GregT (and to all for whom this situation applies)........
I know this is painful indeed because of your love for the resorts, and for dashed hopes of the upcoming visits to paradise!
It has affected us negatively too.

In light of it, however, I sincerely hope you both have extraordinary luck with the options
and end up with exciting and memorable alternative experiences. It is possible. Please share what happens.

What a crazy year this has been, and will be.
That said, keeping your families healthy takes no back seat to a vacation.

Marriott won't let me cancel my early june check in for Ocean Pointe..beach opens soon, pool is open, I guess that's enough for them. Tried canceling in late April, same thing.

Question - Its a fixed week and they didn't offer me an Accommodation Certificate. i took my 3 BR FL Club Grand Vista and used it for the 3Bed Ocean Pointe. I was told by the rep that bascially if I cancel, I have to do a late deposit with interval ( I don't have an account setup yet so I have to pay that fee) and said I pay a fee of $109 and basically I get a week anywhere in the world through interval within a 60 day check in. Would an AC be better for me than the deposit if I'm trying to either get a really nice U.S vacation later in the year (like a SKI week in BreckenRidge or something) vs the Late Deposit?

Or can I swap for a better week and then rent it out for good $ to help recoup my MF? (about $1800).

It sounds like Interval not Marriott and you always have the option of cancelling under their cancellation terms at that time. Any cancellation at this point would be a short notice cancellation and you would get a 30 day in advance replacement week. You can swap for whatever week bests suits you but you aren't allowed to rent out an Interval week without the risk of it being taken away or rejected when your renter arrives. How risk tolerant are you ? Spin the wheel and take your chances.

@Beachspace You may not rent an II exchange so "swap for a better week and then rent it out for good $" is prohibited. If you can travel within short notice, I would say that taking a 60-day restricted week is better than an AC as you can see more and still having a few days of Marriott-Marriott priority.

I think you probably made the right choice. I'm pretty sure that you can extend the AC for a fee if you really need to do so, so the shorter expiration date would be less important in my decision making process than the longer advanced booking window and lower exchange fee. Impossible to know what the difference in strength would/will be since I feel like II is doing a lot of manipulation recently.

Amended:
It did occur to me though that the downfall with an AC is that it is a one time transaction. If II put the restricted deposit in your DC account, then you should be able to retrade it for free, in case you need to in the future. I'm surprised with myself for not thinking about this earlier, as it can be very helpful when living with uncertainty. Perhaps if you change your mind and call II, they might be willing to change it for you.

I'm sorry to hear that you cancelled your Maui trip. I also had to cancel my 3 weeks Hawaii trip in June/July, but I was lucky to retrade to summer 2021 before the 60 days limit kicks in.

If I were you, I would take the 59 days short notice deposit. I think it can still retain Maui trade power and Marriott/Vistana priority, right? I would not like to deal with the grid with a lot limitations for AC. However, 120 days window might be a good advantage. Hope this can work out for you in the end. This year is just the odd year everyone is taking loss in some ways.
