Cancellation insurance question

So Hilton introduced that new cancellation insurance last year (I think it was like $50).

I have a reservation booked for this year, with a combo of last years points and this years points.

I may have to cancel the reservation, so does anyone know what happens with the points that get re-deposited (if I read the cancellation stuff correctly)?

Specifically, do they re-deposit the 2015 points as "rescued" into 2016 (I did have to rescue some points, BTW), or what?

Thanks!

The points get deposited back into the bucket from whence they came.

Rescued points would still be rescued points.

I'm not sure why cancellation insurance is necessary, given the workaround of changing the booking to a date outside the penalty period, unless that is -- you have a non-changeable reservation or may need to cancel on the day of arrival.

I think the reservation change only allows for same or more points. You can't book for something less, or am I remembering incorrectly?

The cancellation insurance is NOT for points but rather only for other travel post departure issues. It includes interruptions but not actual cancellations before travel.

I read it recently, and was surprised it did not include cancellations.

I think you're thinking of the VacationGuard.
I'm specifically referring to this (although I said insurance, which is my bad, apparently it's the Cancellation Protection).
