GM Folks!
Thoughts on going on short trip to Victoria BC from Port Angeles WA for Canada Day?
Yay/Nay?
Too crowded or ok?
Nice to see or don't bother?
? Delta Ocean Pointe vs Marriott inner harbour/DT (Hilton) vs Fairmont Empress for staying that night?
? take rental car with me (or leave car at a garage in Port Angeles & just walk & take uber/lyft in Victoria)
(Anything re insurance permit for Canada)?
Will take US Passport but anything else to take or not take?
Any changes in ferry crossings to Canada from US with recent US CBP changes?
Any other recommendations?
TY!

I can't comment on the ferry from Port Angeles specifically, because I usually take the Tsawwassen Ferry from the BC Mainland to get there. My daughter lives there so I do go fairly often. Since the ferry you're taking (if I recall correctly) goes into the Victoria harbour, I think I would leave the car unless there is somewhere you want to drive to that is outside the city (or if you just want the cargo room to bring things with you). It depends how much you like having a car, I often stay in mine on the ferry and while waiting for the ferry too, so do prefer it to going as a walk-on passenger but it is significantly more expensive taking my car. If you're planning to just explore downtown Victoria and the waterfront area that can be done by foot.

If you take a rental car I would make sure you can pre-book with the car so you don't have to wait extra sailings to get there or back. I would just take the car insurance offered by the agency unless you have a credit card that will cover it. Credit cards are widely accepted so I probably wouldn't even bring local currency. Victoria being such a tourist destination (including the cruise ships coming in from Alaska), stores will have US exchange rates everywhere and no one will complain if you decide to tip in USD.

My guess is it would be crowded, not just because it is Canada Day, but because July is just generally busy. Unless you really want to see it on Canada Day, I would probably be more loose with my plans so it could be weather dependent (either that or take an umbrella), the first week of July can still be hit or miss.

Your US Passport will be sufficient but also have your drivers licence on hand in case you're young enough to get asked for ID when ordering alcohol or buying it to bring home. "Young enough" is that you look 40 or under. BC wines, spirits, ciders and craft beer options are fantastic (and some of the bottles look just plain beautiful) so I would consider bringing something back or at least sampling some when you're in the restaurants.

As for hotels, Marriott Inner Harbour is a great location for walking and I've stayed there recently, the lounge is just ok if you have Bonvoy status to use it. For the Fairmont Empress I would stay it depends on your room type. I have not stayed recently but I seem to recall them having some older traditional rooms and some really nice ones at considerably higher prices than the base rate. Generally speaking, it will be overpriced compared to other options and the parking rate may be more too. Your USD will go far, but the hotels are still going to be charging for parking if you decide to take the rental. If you're not married to a certain hotel brand, I have had many great stays at Inn at Laurel Point. Not really on the radar of many as it is not a big brand, but a variety of great rooms including ones in (my favourite) Erickson Wing, with large patios facing the harbour. Fantastic restaurant too, easy parking and still very walkable to everything with being just a few blocks away from the crazy-busy areas.

I will be staying in the Delta Ocean Pointe next month so can weigh in on that one later. Generally though, as it is on the other side of the harbour you will always be walking across the bridge to get from your hotel to the main tourist sights. It will only add a few minutes on to your walks, so if you like a quieter area (or it is a better deal) then it would be a good choice too. I have been to their restaurant for dinner, and the happy-hour there is very popular with locals.

I do recommend that you make your dinner reservations in advance if there is somewhere you want to go specifically. They have lots of restaurants but they have many that you just can't get a table at without a reservation or they may have long lines. Victoria has a lot of great breakfast places too, so I would work that into my plans for the following morning.

Canada Day or not, Victoria is a lovely place to explore for a weekend. Enjoy your time there.

In 2006 we did a trip where we flew into Seattle and took a roundabout way to Whistler that included a stop in Port Angeles and took the ferry to Victoria. As we were heading to Vancouver for a few days we took our rental car from Port Angeles and used the ferry from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen to get to Vancouver. Victoria is a very walkable city and we did some type of bus tour that took us out of the city a bit. I can't comment on the Canada Day aspect or the border crossing, but I would definitely do it again. I really enjoyed the ferry ride too, as it's just a bit different way to arrive somewhere.

If you have a chance, I would highly recommend a drive up to Hurricane Ridge from the Port Angeles area as it is a really beautiful area. This is a picture that my son took of me and it is one of my favorite pics. (It was taken at the end of June)

Thx for the excellent advice @marmite & @BingoBangoBongo !
We plan to do many things at ONP (staying at WM Discovery Bay as home base for 10 days, so plenty of time & hence thinking of going to Victoria for a night/ 2 days)...
Have a Marriott FNC; so booked Delta Ocean Pointe (as a nice view of Harbor & fireworks from there potentially + lounge as Marriott Plat status); hate to pay hard cold cash for Empress when can get the Marriott's or Hilton DT for free on points; can just go for their High Tea for the experience...
Can potentially go over weekend also (but may be busy with July 4th), so the timing makes it likely busy whenever we go around that time...
TY!

Are you a WM owner? If you ever go for a longer trip, the Victoria WM is fantastic (especially the PH units) and overlooks the harbour and marina. I also use my Bonvoy free nights for overnight trips, but usually am only able to use those certificates in the off-season as the points required are usually too high during summer. Glad your trip is coming together nicely.

Yes pls; WM owner here but have already booked the WM discovery bay stay (& unlike HGVC, where I CAN book stays at difft loxns on same dates, I cannot do so with WM...)
Need mobility accessible room at WM Discovery bay for mom as usual rooms are townhouses over 3 floors which would be not possible for her; so did not want to mess up our WM discovery bay stay & hence not using WM Victoria...
TY!

Delta Ocean Pointe was 65k Marriott pts for Canada Day..
Had a 50k FNC; added 15k pts; good use of 50k Marriott certificate...

I live nearby Victoria, and was there last year for Canada Day. It will be very busy but still worth the trip IMO. Like everybody else has said, the ferry drops you right downtown and it is very walkable. Not sure if you're into biking but Victoria has bike lanes everywhere and flat. For two days I wouldn't bother with the additional cost of bringing a car unless there's something in particular you absolutely have to see out of downtown.

I've stayed at the Empress before and would say if you can afford it then it's worth it for a short trip. It's a real experience in a beautiful historic hotel. If you want to save a few $ and be out of the busiest area I agree with the suggestions for WM, Delta, and I'll add Laurel Point.

You'll want to make dinner reservations early. I have a lot of favourites in Victoria... for a more fine dining meal I'd suggest Janevca (short Uber ride) and Marilena. My go to recommendation is Il Terrazzo as it will appeal to most anyone who enjoys Italian food. Hipster more locally sourced and charming spots are Nourish Kitchen and End Dive.

There are many good cafes in Victoria, but my favourite downtown is Torch Song.

Victoria is a beautiful, interesting, and safe city to visit for a couple of nights!

I don’t believe the Washington ferry system is is going to Canada at this time. You would have to take black ball ferry or a day ferry from Seattle like the Victoria clipper.

Yes pls; love biking (although Canada day may be super crowded in the Inner Harbour) & likely will just take pax ferry & leave rental car in Port Angeles garage..
We visited Victoria 20+ years ago & had visited Butchart gardens, Empress etc & loved it but would be nice to visit again, esp as we will be so close (& have so much time on hand during our trip)...
TY!

Delta Ocean Pointe is a beautiful property with amazing surroundings and the view of the fireworks from there should be great. In general there is less hustle and bustle compared to the other side of the harbour, it's a nice area for long waterfront walks on a paved pathway.

Do make dinner reservations early for anything near Ocean Pointe (and likely all of Victoria). We were there in August and finally ended up at the Keg at 9:00. Not that there is anything wrong with the Keg, it's a good restaurant, but I didn't go halfway across the county to eat in a restaurant that I can visit any time at home. And we had been looking forward to seafood, not steak! Lesson learned for my next trip to Victoria.

I'd be very interested to hear about your trip to WM Discovery Bay and thing that you find to do there. I've often looked at that location.

Enjoy your trip!

I had a good laugh at this and agree 💯 %
