Can you cancel a replacement week?

I have a confirmed exchange for next spring that I know already I need to cancel. I really don't want to cancel it yet since it is my understanding that I get a replacement week that expires one year from the date I cancel my confirmed exchange. So my question is...I see some availability at another resort that I would like to book and then give the week as a gift to my extended family. However knowing them something might happen and then they would not be able to go ;) So is it possible to cancel an exchange that was made with replacement week and get another replacement week for that? If so when would that expire?

if you cancel an cancellation replacement week you do NOT get the week back. So, you only get to cancel once.

What is the difference between a cancellation week and retrade? I called II about cancelling my reservation. They said that since I brought their insurance I would have to go thru the insurance company and have them deny my claim before I would get a replacement week. But if I wanted to avoid all that I could just retrade for another exchange fee. I joined the DC club and when I mention that she said that then I can have one retrade without paying another fee.
Now I am confused. Can I have more than one retrade? Can I have a retrade and if something happens and I am not able to use the retraded week can I then have a replacement week? Or just retrade again? The II rep said that to retrade I just need to keep calling for availability. With a replacement week I can have an ongoing request. :ponder:

It was my understanding that you could only retrade once. A retrade is really like a cancel and rebook. You can't retrade a retrade for the same reason you can't cancel and rebook using a cancellation week.

If you see something on II online inventory, you can do "retrade" without any exchange fee which is a perk of DC club. Non Dc club member should pay $129 for retrade.
If you cancel that week again in the future, you will get a replacement week which is good for 12 months from cancellation.
You don't have to call II for inventory check. Just tell them what you want (from their online inventory), then they can do retrade for you.

Worked for me earlier this year, but no guarantees of course!

I have cancelled a retrade week earlier this year and was issued a cancellation week, but as always YMMV. This was a booking for my inlaws and it sure was "fun" to try to get them to understand the rules of trading!!

I retraded my shadow ridge studio about a week ago (from Cypress Harbour x-mas week to Ocean Pointe Jan. 2BR week), and have heard that in case I cancel that week, I would get a replacement week. Maybe I heard wrong that I wouldn't get a replacement week?

You might, as the PP indicate YMMV. I just know that someone had an issue trying to retrade a retrade booking in to KoOlina recently. Though canceling could possibly give you a cancellation replacement week.

They definitely will not let you retrade a retrade, they made that very clear to me on the phone. But they did give me a cancelation week for the retrade which i could use immediately to complete the trade... Whatever makes II happy!

Seems counter productive. So you can't retrade a retrade. But you can cancel a retrade and use it to make a trade. Though I think a canceled retrade doesn't carry any Marriott internal preference and would carry a $149/$169 exchange fee whereas a retrade usually does not.

The cancellation week I had was a starwood and did carry the internal starwood preference as I was able to book a 2 bedroom at Westin Maui villas that had just been part of a bulk bank that was only visible to starwood owners(but again, YMMV!). However it did have the higher exchange fee and that might be the answer on what the deal is with this rule, thank you for reminding me of that!
