Just a few quick questions re: partial kitchens in the MC .....

1. No toasters, correct?

2. I know there is a microwave; but no oven. How about a burner or two? Will I be able to make mac & cheese or ramen noodles for my kids?

3. As I recall....the fridge isn't quite a "mini"...but isn't a regular sized one?

4. the packs of coffee & popcorn get replaced daily? And the toiletry items: shampoo, conditioner, etc?

Thanks....just trying to plan ahead.

Also...if anyone has stayed at the MC recently.....how are the elevators?

Hi DEB,

1. No toasters

2. Microwave, no burners

3. Not a mini but defintely small. It fits under the counter top.

4. Coffee, popcorn, toiletries replaced daily.

5. There is usually a pretty good wait for the elevators. I often use the service elevator as most don't know about it.

We were there last August. Let me know if I can help at all.

If you put a pack of ramen noodles in a bowl of water on high for 4 mintues in the microwave...it shoud turn out just fine. No need for a burner for that one.
Can't say the same for mac & cheese....unless you buy the kind for a microwave.

manhattan club

We were there the past 2 weekends.

Elevators were better - but we used at off times. (Don't try to use at noon checkout, etc). Made that mistake too often.

Kitchen extremely limited. We only used frige to hold soda, wine, etc.

We met some people there that said they eat in room every day.
They said they really only do cold cuts, etc.

I'm thinking you could bring one of those burners with you, if you felt like
carrying it. We may do that when we go for 1 week next year. DD loves mac & cheese and pasta. Resturants are so expensive there - unless you do McDonalds - but who wants to eat there for a week.

Any one else know how to cut cost and eat in room?

Thanks for the info. I thought I remembered a burner, but I guess I was thinking of another place. We plan to eat breakfast in the unit (just cereal, untoasted bagels, or yogurt), and were hoping to be able to make a light evening meal in the unit. Guess sandwiches will be the way to go. At least the kids can have their ramen noodles....that's assuming there is some type of container, (measuring cup, perhaps?), to heat them in the microwave.

We have found several inexpensive, (for NYC), restaurants and pubs, so we'll hit those for lunches.

There is a Whole Foods Market here. You should be able to do pretty well picking up some items for the unit.

A picture of kitchen

Here is a picture of the kitchen in our unit last March.

Besides Whole Foods, which we loved, there is also a grocery store mid-block on West 57 street.

Several times we ate evening meal in Chinatown and brought leftovers back for lunch the next day. So nice to have a fridge and microwave. The microwave popcorn setting didn't work though as it burned the popcorn every time.

We took a small George Foreman grill when we stayed at the MC, and it worked out great. We bought delicious organic steaks. chicken breasts and burgers at Whole Foods, yum. We made "toasted" grilled sandwiches in the GF with cold cuts and cheeses and fancy breads, and also sort of quesadillas using flavored tortillas. Yum yum. We even brought back to the unit the leftovers from our Carnegie Deli visit, and ended up making another two or three sandwiches out of the leftovers, all heated and toasted in the GF. I've never tried just toasting bread in the GF but I think it would work. We take a lot of trips every year and for us to afford that many trips, we try to keep our dining costs way down so we always make heavy use of our timeshare kitchens. We still enjoyed several fantastic meals out in NYC, but it sure helped to eat most of the meals in our unit.

I always pack two or three of those disposable plastic bowls with lids when we go to timeshares--fill them with stuff so they don't take up any extra room. They can then be used for microwaving or storing leftovers. They also protect the fragile stuff--for example, for our trip that just ended, I had a couple of almost-ready avocados at home that would've been ruined by the time we got back from our trip, so I packed one each in a plastic bowl and they survived the trip just fine, and we had yummy avocados ready to eat at our timeshare. I didn't even pitch the bowls when our vacation was over, since we had some leftover food that I packed into the bowls for us to eat on the plane on the way home. Better than the overpriced dried out junk they were selling on the plane!

Fairway Market

If you want a real NYC experience take the bus, subway or walk to Broadway and 74th Street and shop at Fairway Market--a fabulous place to find fresh food and fabulous people. Then Citarella's Fish Market is just north of there--I am not suggesting that you cook fish in the MC kitchen, but just enjoy the view of the fish display in their window. It changes daily of course and the workers there are the Picassos of Perch and Parsley.
