No. Max is only applicable if you buy developer and discontinues with a resale purchase. The points will give you full 12(?) month access to DRI property(s) but only for the property/collection vs. the entire system because it a resale. There are also additional DRI resale limitations. Make sure the resort/collection is one in which you want to use and there are sufficient points to stay in the unit and season you desire. You will not be able to combine these points with your HGVC points - it's like buying a separate system.
DRI Maint Fee (MF) / point are very expensive compared to HGVC. All of these resale limitations and high MF make DRI points difficult to give away for free. As a resale buyer, DRI will not deedback your points so you could be stuck. It's a very different system than HGVC. Many have desperately turned to timeshare exit companies and lost money.
If your friends are trying to exit DRI, since they are developer purchased with MAX, their best bet is to pay $1000 to HVC/DRI to deed it back to the developer rather than trying to sell it to a resale buyer who won't be able to deed it back.
If you want DRI, you would be better buying a deeded DRI week at a specific resort and trading via DEX or II, renting from a DRI owner, or trading your HGVC points in RCI for DRI.
