Buy a timeshare for the Getaways?

Last week I went to a timeshare presentation at SVV. I told the gentleman from the beginning that we were not interested since we have friends and relatives that are willing to rent to us, often for the cost of their maintenance fees. He told me I should buy for the getaways, since we are retired and usually travel with family. He showed the website on his computer and said we could get great deals and even holiday weeks. He said the lowest offer to get this deal would be $10,000, needless to say we declined. However, he did peek my interest, so it is worth it to get a timeshare for the getaways? Do you even need to own a timeshare to qualify and how does this work? Any information on this subject would be helpful.

You do need a timeshare to get access to Interval International ... however you could get a free timeshare with low maintenance fees if you wanted to do it only for the getaways. As a retired person with maximum flexibility I could see this benefit.

You can get access to II simply by having a resale timeshare and then paying the annual fee to II to join (around $100/year). A studio or 1BR is all that is needed. You can even get an every other year (EOY) unit if you don't think you'll use the timeshare as much and just want the Getaways. With the EOY unit your timeshare maint. fees would be 1/2 of the annual rate.

Getaways are a good value if you can go in off-season as that is where the best deals can be found. II will also give you accommodation certificates as a bonus sometimes - these can be used to book into various timeshares (pretty much all off-season) for just an exchange fee.

Thanks for the quick replies , Good to know it can be resale. So does it need to be a certain “ brand” of timeshare?i just pay the fee and don’t have to “ deposit” the week? As long as I’ve been lurking you’d think I would understand how this all works.

It does need to be in the Interval International System. If I were you I would look for a Mandatory Resale within the Vistana portfolio. Then at least you would have Star Options too. Maybe a SVV Bella or Key West

You could do like me and take ownership of a free timeshare from the TUG bargain bin, join Interval, then give it away again. As long as you keep paying the Interval membership you can buy getaways and get AC weeks, they won’t know you got rid of it. :)

You can get one resale timeshare that is affiliated with both II and RCI... Two trading companies with one week!

Thanks for the great advice. Both of those ideas are intriguing . I’m sitting in the sun at the pirate pool at SVV right now. Best way to read TUG!

Wow, I hadn’t thought of joining both. Will have to do more research....if the deals are good, might be worth it.

RCI has Disney, HGVC, Wyndham Family. I have both because we own in MVC family and an HGVC affiliate.
As others indicated, there are TS that trade into both. My Sheraton Desert Oasis trades into both.

SDO is a good option as MF are pretty low and it trades in both. SVR also trades in both as do parts of SBP I believe.

When we bought our SDO resale in 2017 II actually gave us a free trial II account for two years. Not sure if they still do this.

Suggestion only to the OP, if you want to rent only. I would look at RedWeek.com for timeshare rentals or TUG Marketplace rentals..

You do not need to purchase a timeshare or pay MFees.

Once owned these: FirstFairway@Walden X 2; Lawai Beach; ManhattanClub; PuebloBonitoRose; 4 South Africa--now timeshare-free
Also consider checking the Rentals Offered forum on TUG for rentals in the next 45 days.

You could also post in the Rentals Wanted forum if there’s a particular area you want in the next 45 days.

Do you ever get DVC through RCI in a trade? I’ve looked into DVC but I don’t book trips there 12 mo or even 7 out. Sometimes it’s 5 mo or two months last minute.

I don't recall seeing much DVC in RCI. The occasional studio is about it. And RCI Last calls- (equivalent to getaways) are usually off or shoulder season at 2nd tier TSs. Think ski resorts in mud season or beach resorts in winter. Or leftover units with lovely dumpster or parking lot views.

I wouldn't buy even a free giveaway TS for these. My usual $.02 worth.

I’ve done very well with getaways from II in Orlando. Most recent 400 bucks for a 2 bedroom in Marriott in Orlando

Because I am West Coast, I primarily focused on HGVC. I do follow the Sighting Boards to see when there is availability.
As others indicated, Getaways are the strays

My II account membership fee was paid for by Vistana via the SVN fee I was paying them, but I've recently sold both of my ownerships. One of them has already transferred, and the other is still being processed by Vistana. As of right now, the II account is still active even though my Vistana account now shows no contracts. Does anyone know if I'll be able to keep the II account by paying the yearly fee directly, after the second transfer is complete? It would be great to continue having access to Getaways and ACs.
