I went to see the Steven Spielberg movie, "Bridge of Spies", with Tom Hanks which opened last night. It was phenomenal! People clapped at the end - which I have never heard before in the little movie theatre I frequent. For those of us "of a certain age", it reminded me of a very scary time, when children lived with the fear of Russian bombs falling on our heads. I remember air raid drills and hiding under my desk at school. Today children have to fear local threats like school shootings and the like. It's sad, because childhood should be a time of innocence.

Just saw it today. It was a good story and based on past events that took place Around 1960 plus or minus a couple years. Another great movie with Tom Hanks.

When the Bay of Pigs happened in 1961, I was 7 years old and living in West Palm Beach Florida, or 90 miles from Cuba. One afternoon, my parents loaded the family, all six of us in the family car and started driving for Georgia. I remember hiding under the desk and being told not to look at the flash of light during drills at school. Later I spent 20 years in the Navy fighting the Cold War. The spy game was real and all around us and never stopped until the 90s when the Cold War ended. One of my ground jobs was Intell Officer for the squadron and I read everything I could about the Soviet Union, their operations and deception. This is one piece of the Cold War that never got published and worth seeing.

Bridge of Spies
By Giles Whittell

In 1962, the US and Soviet Russia agreed to a prisoner exchange on a bridge in Berlin. The stories of the prisoners and their role in the Cold War come to life in an account hailed as “riveting, meticulously researched, and beautifully written” (New York Times bestselling author Ben Macintyre).

Go to www.bookbub.com for the deal - you have to be a member (free to enroll). Usually these specials are time-limited and I'm not sure what the cut-off date is for this offer.

Went to see Bridge of Spies last night. An outstanding Spielberg production well worth seeing despite all the 'goofs' reported in IMDb...such as flying a flag with 50 stars instead of 48 at the time and visible video cables on the ground in one scene. But what an affront at the ticket booth.... paid by debit and was presented with a POS terminal with the tip page showing.... do we now tip ticket sellers?
