At some time in the dark and distant past, I needed Internet access at an airport and signed up for a Boingo account.

From what I have seen and heard, Boingo is a pretty good at what it does which is identifying wireless internet services networks and providing access without a specific account on that network.

However, I found out the hard way that it essentially can take control when one attempts to log on to Wayport internet access at a resort. The reason this matters is that Wayport offers a price break if one signs up for a week, while one must have a Boingo monthly subscription (billed directly to a cc each month) to avoid the $7.95 daily Boingo charge. This could be a real bummer at Marriott resorts that provide Wayport access at no charge.

I'll spare the details, but I had to run a system restore and remove all temporary internet files in order to set myself up to run without Boingo. The real aggravation was that in the process, I got charged $7.95 twice by Boingo without ever seeing the internet. It took an aggravated phone call when I looked at my cc account today, but Boingo is going to remove those charges.

The moral is Boingo does work, but be aware that it may work even when you don't want it to. For a minor user like me it is better to remove it from my laptop than to keep it from taking over when I don't want it to.

Good points.

I've used BOINGO a lot. Tried it out on a daily, decided to go to monthly. I couldn't 'convert' had to start over with a new username.

Later.. BOINGO sent me an email and offered my canceled account a better deal $9.95/month, so now I have another new username.

When in Sanibel at a coffee shop, BOINGO kicked in, no worker bee at the coffee shop even know what I was talking about!
