Remember the Cabbage Patch dolls? This is a clip showing the frenzy associated with trying to get a doll...

Oh, yes! And Madame Alexander dolls and Department 56 Christmas houses & accessories. When they began over producing these, the demand went down. The fun was in the hunt, not the owning.

I remember. I refused to pay the cost (expensive, to me) plus I had boys. So I bought the kits and sewed them each one anyway. Not sure how much they played with them, but they are still somewhere around here as keepsakes.

After we moved to Salem when Jon (now 33) and Cass (now 30) were in Middle School and High School many of the Stores would have free gifts they handed out. We would head out about 3:30am with list of the stores with the best free gifts. JC Penny had Disney Snow Globes. Shopco always had good gifts as did the Emporium. One year Shopco had Charactors from Rudolph. Your were suppose to get one Charactor. We wore coats with big pockets. We went to different shopping carts and each got a complete set. At the Emporium Cass talked them out of an extra stuffed Bear to send to her brother in the Air Force. We would quickly hit 4 to 5 stores (no shopping) collect our gifts and then go to Breakfast.

Patti had been collecting Dept 56 Dickens Village for at least 25 years. She takes over the House to set them up.

Just made two black Friday purchases online....one electronics and the other household. Early reports of retailers using more sophisticated tricks this year.....count down clocks beside your item and the number of people viewing your item. Biggest problem so far....people loading up their carts and not completing the purchase. I wonder if any retailers are offering a last minute incentive if you fill your cart and back out.....but wait, we've got an even better deal!

One year, our plan was for me to leave for the mall at 3am.
DW would follow at 5am. But the headlights on my car were out.
I took DW's car instead and called my S-S to go pick up "mom."
I went to Walmart and bought new headlights. That was fun.

I've only ever stood in line in the wee hours once. It was 20 years ago, standing in line to get one of 50 Zelda Ocarina Nintendo video games at a Best Buy in Atlanta. I got number 38. The 50 sold out in less than two minutes. A couple of weeks ago, I sent my sons a notice of the 20th anniversary of the release of the game. They commented that it remains their all-time favorite, and they spent many happy hours with that game. Sounds like the early wake-up call that Black Friday was worth it.
