That's pretty wild stuff. When I lived on Oahu as a kid, there were lots of stories about wild and crazy things nobody expected to be true, but the stories were pretty ubiquitous. I loved hearing locals "talk story."

I read someplace not long ago (maybe at the Bishop Museum?) of groups of people who lived in upcountry Kauai, backwoods people who lived along the Napali Coast, claiming to be Menehune. So even if it's a legend, it has very deep roots. They may not have been two feet tall, and may not have done great construction overnight, but tribes of smaller-sized industrious people could easily have lived alongside the Hawaiians.

I think it has been pretty well documented that a previous native population, commonly called the "Menehune," lived in the islands before the Polynesians came. But history usually says that the Poynesians wiped them out. It would be interesting if their ancestors were still alive.

Ancestors or descendents? ;)

While sitting in the rain forest in Puna at night we heard the croki frogs and other wildlife. What a racket. In the morning the croki noise was replaced by roosters and doves. Im glad I brought ear plugs. :D

I think my dil could be part Menehune as she is just under 4ft tall island girl.:D
