The Room was spacious. Staff was helpful and friendly. There are a number of store fronts. Unfortunately most are currently empty. There is an Escape Room, Real Estate Office, Hair Salon, and the Wild Girl Saloon and Grill. As the USA recovers from Covid hopefully the store fronts will fillup. There is not lot to do in Heber-Overgaard. However there is a lot to do within easy drive. We were not able to visit Fort Apache. It is on Apache Tribal Lands, which are still closed down.
In Springerville there is a very nice Museum. It focuses on the History of the local area and the local Hopi/Zuni archeological site. They give tours of the site. It was very interesting and worthwhile. Much better than what is seen in the Petrified Wood National Park. It is about a 90 minute drive east of Bison Ranch. We kicked out early to make the 8:30am tour, which starts with a 30 minute film. We had lunch in Springerville and then drove back Bison Ranch.
Because we could not visit Fort Apache we went to the Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. It is about 90 minutes West of Bison Ranch. It is the largest natural travertine bridge in the World. You can see a lot from the various View Points from the top, but is that good enough for us - no. We hiked down the easy (steep) trail. We then went through the natural tunnel under the Bridge. This involved a lot of Big Rocks to navigate, climb, jump, etc. Each of us fell once. This part is best done in tennis shoes or bare feet. I was wearing Hiking Boots. My ankles needed the support on the trail down and up. We then climbed up the harder trail (even steeper) on the other side. We said we were not going to do all of this. But we were glad we did. Though we were sore and spent a lot of time in the hot tub at the Resort that night.
The next trip was to Holbrook. About an hour north. The City owns lands with some great Petrogriffs. If you contact Mike at the Holbrook Park's Office he will give you a private tour. The morning is best so we met at 7:30am. Oh my goodness such fantastic Petrogriffs and you are right next to them. We also visited the Cemetery in Holbrook. It goes back to the late 1800's. After an early lunch in Holbrook we were off to the Petrified National Park and Painted Desert National Park. Then back to the Resort
.
The guy in the Cowboy Hat is Mike. Patti and I are standing by a nice Petrogriff. These are only 2 samples of hundreds of Petrogriffs. Mike said I was the only guy he has met that wears more jewelry then him.
