It was just announced the Ironam World championship is being moved to Saint George, Utah from Kona for 1 year. It brings in over $30 million a year during its run to the state and helps support over 1000 stat non-profits with over $1 million in donations. Could free up a lot of availability of vacation rentals. They are saying it is for one year but others are suspicious that it will be permanent because cost of doing business will be so much lower for the athletes and Ironman organization in Utah. Time will tell.

On a brighter note, Hawaiians have been saying they want to see fewer visitors!

It was originally rescheduled from October 2021 to February 2022, and then moved to May in Utah. The October Ironman will still take place in 2022 with a new format:

There are people saying that even though they say they are PLANNING on bringing the Ironman back to Kona that there is the possibility that if the economics workout out better in Saint George they could make it permanent. We worked the Ironman for many years while living in Kona and now we are planning on working it when it is is Saint George. People believed the NFL Pro Bowl would return to Hawaii, after being played there for 30 some years too but that is not looking so good either. It is disappointing pointing to see the communities lose out on those events.

I totally agree with the thoughts you are expressing here. While we feel that Hawaii is a very special place and a great place to visit and have events there are other places that are special and great. When costs are looked at for holding events in Hawaii versus other locations in the United States Hawaii will usually come in last. Therefore, while Hawaii IS special the costs of doing business in these island in the middle of the Pacific is costly.
