Our Hawaii trip was cancelled last Oct so I'm planning to visit Big Island or Kauai June 2022. Because of the cost, looking to spend 2 weeks. To keep costs reasonable I was looking to stay on one island for the entire vacation. Also our children will be 4th grade to preschool. Any suggestions which island? TIA

I vote for Kauai. The beaches, especially in the south around Poipu are more accessible and family friendly for swimming, like Baby Beach. I think you are smart to stay 2 weeks on one island.

@SteelerGal , I seem to recall some posts from you from a few months (or more) previous on this very issue. We are in the same boat as you - trying to plan a first trip to Hawaii that was supposed to occur in 2020. As an aside, you might want to visit this thread:

...as I am trying to find the most economical way to take this trip but enjoying it as much as possible at the same time.
Having said that, I know our previous trip was scheduled to the west side of the Big Island (Kona) and we had read up a good bit on the Hawaii Revealed website / app. If you have not checked that out, it might be a useful resource to you.

+1 for Kauai, especially with younger children. Better beaches, less crowded, and more family friendly. Big Island is a hikers paradise, but beaches are fewer and further between. Lots more lava rock on BI, and easier for kids to get hurt.

I don't have young children, but concur with the votes for the Poipu or mid-island areas of Kauai (I adore Princeville but not for your purpose). Better weather and beaches a great place for families.

Marriott Ko Olina on Oahu would be another very good choice and has the advantage of potentially easier NS flights from the mainland. If the grownups want some night life and have babysitting available (grandparents ;) ?) Waikiki has some nice restaurants and some nice options for parents, as well as family friendly food, and calm beaches for kids (who can also watch the surfers).

I don’t think you can go wrong with Kauai. Small children seem to really enjoy it. When our grandkids visit they don’t want to go back home.

I agree that the Poipu area (especially the Marriott) is the best place to stay with it’s consistently good weather, great beach and good choices of restaurants and shops.
