I will be staying at the Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort in Cancun and would like to watch the Cozumel Ironman.

What is the best or cheapest way to get from Cancun to Cozumel as early as possible in the morning and back late in the evening?

Thanks!

The cheapest way to get to Cozumel from the Hotel Zone is to take a city bus, the R-1 into Cancun city. It will turn right on Tulum Ave. Go down about 4 blocks until you see the ADO bus terminal. At the terminal catch a bus to Playa del Carmen (they leave every 30 minutes or less). Once in Playa walk across the street towards the sea, turn right and walk to the Ferry Terminal. Take the boat across to Cozumel, and then a taxi to the Cozumel Convention Center where the event is hosted. All this may take 3 hours on a good day. Or, you can simply take a taxi from your hotel to Playa del Carmen at get the driver to drop you at the Ferry Terminal. Probably a 2 hour trip, if you get the ferry connection. It leaves every hour early in the morning, and every half hour during the rest of the day.

Here's link that describes a bit what alfie said:

For "the cheapest", I think that'd be a colectivo:

...or take a colectivo/bus the day before, find a cheap hotel in Playa and get on the first ferry in the morning.

...or the one time I rented a car, it had 150,000+ miles on it & looked like it, but it was cheap. Rented it through my resort.

...or sit through a high pressure timeshare sales pitch for the free car rental offer in return-NOT:eek:

Thanks a lot!

Regarding collective being cheaper than public bus: We are talking way below $10 difference here, right?

And what price are we talking for just taking a taxi from Cancun to the ferry terminal?

Even a cheap hotel in Playa would probably make the whole trip much more expensive, right?

How early should I leave Cozumel without risking of being stuck in Playa or Cancun City without a bus running anymore at night?

The collective is always cheaper, but much slower, because it stops everywhere. You, simply wave at it, and it stops on the highway, or lets you off along the road. The taxi, last year from the hotel zone to Playa was 390 pesos, the price is usually posted by the door or your hotel, but definitely always ask the driver. (a tourist always pays more) Finally the buses from Playa leave late into the evening, the problem is getting off Cozumel island, the Ultramar ferries stop at 8:00 pm but, you should check when you buy the tickets. As for the hotel situation, you may wish to stay in downtown San Miguel on Cozumel island rather than in Playa overnight.

Last year we took a taxi from Cancun (mid hotel zone not downtown, that'd be farther) round trip to Playa. I'm recalling $75 each way, but of course check before going.
