We will be in Thailand and Cambodia next January :D and usually don't get travel insurance -- but this time....

We'll be there 30 days, we are senior citizens and I am a 12 year breast cancer survivor. I get intimidated by some of the exclusions on previous health issues so Tuggers -- have you taken out any travel insurance and had to use it -- or know someone that has?

Our travel agent is suggesting Access America. Thank you in advance.

I suggest you read the travel insurance sticky article at the top of the list of topics for this Travel forum. The three companies mentioned and linked therein are all first class companies that get high marks in consumer surveys. Those three companies were chosen for the article because of their reputation.

However, policies vary widely - among those companies and even among individual policies for each company. So search for exactly the coverage you want and be sure to read the fine print for the policy you decide to get.

You can compare coverage of the different companies on this website www.insuremytrip.com

As Dave mentioned read the policy VERY CAREFULLY. Most travel insurance policies are named peril policies and may only pay out if certain conditions or situations exist.

In our case, we were refused trip interuption/travel delay because the reason for the delay/interuption was a fisherman's strike. The policy would only pay out for very specific reasons and a strike resulting in the blockade of a port (we were on a cruise) wasn't covered. Of the people I knew, two had claims refused and two had them paid. All had different insurance companies. One has filed a case in small claims court against his insurer.

Most policies have a 10 day free look in which you can cancel the policy if you find something in it you don't like. Use that period to read and reread the policy. Make sure you understand it and if you don't, call and ask questions. Write down the date and time you called and the name of the person you spoke with in case there is ever any issue with filing a claim.

The best advice I could give you is go to an independent insurance agent that can discuss and explaine the coverages and limitations to you. Do not go to a bank or travel agent that sells the stuff to purchase it as these people are not insurance professionals and do not know enough about the products to help.
