Starting to plan now for a visit to NCV.
We made the mistake about 5 years ago of visiting SanDiego during the "JuneGloom"....and it truly was gloomy, cool too.
We were thinking of mid-August to early September.
We like the pool, the ocean and don't like to be cold, (we live in upstate NY and get enough of that).
Would appreciate any Tugger's advice.
Thanks,
Mike

I don't remember June ever being that cool and I was at Camp Pendleton for several years.....By the averages, June is slightly cooler than Sept, but I really don't think there is a bad time to visit in the Summer.....

The warmest months on the southern California coast are May, August, and September.

Caveat: NCV owners report difficulty reserving prime summer weeks; exchanging in during the summer will be dicey.

For me the ocean is only warm enough during August and the first couple weeks of September. We have both May Gray and June Gloom on the coast. Sometimes, the whole summer is gray on the coast (at least in San Diego).

I live in San Diego too and echo what Pressley says.

When the ocean is about as warm as it is going to get, it is only about 72 degrees. That is pretty chilly. Some years it never even makes it to that temp.

So, if you skip the fantasy  of enjoying a warm ocean and just use the heated Marriott pools, you'll enjoy the fantastic weather in Sept. and October. Both months are easier to exchange into as well. Early November can also be nice but sometimes we start to get rain during that month.

I've been to NCV twice via exchange, and both times it was in the first week of June. We had great weather both times. The first time, in 2011, it was sunny and bright every day. It did seem a bit on the cool side - with those ocean breezes, especially in the evening, but the sun felt warm even though the air was chilly at times. Inland, in LA, it was quite warm. The second time, in 2013, it was also sunny and a bit cool, but we tended to have clouds in the morning and the sun would come out in the afternoon. Again, it was warmer in LA. We visited San Diego on this trip and couldn't ask for more perfect weather. I was under the impression that San Diego has consistently gorgeous weather every day. :) We didn't test the ocean waters either time so I can't comment about that.

I wouldn't hesitate to go back during the 1st week of June. YMMV. Maybe the trick is to visit in odd years?

This September will be a great time, I was just at Crystal Cove a couple weeks ago and the ocean temp was 70 degrees, the el nino has warmed up the coast nicely. We now live 15 minutes from NCV, chose to live here year round we liked it so much!

The weather should be very nice. You might still have morning fog some days, but it's unlikely to last all day (as it sometimes does in June).

I prefer September over August. Although the weather is similar both months, the number people at local attractions (especially the two parks at Disneyland) is smaller when school is generally back in session. Waits for restaurant tables tend to be shorter. Beach parking is easier to get. Of course, for families with children in school, that's not an option.

If you are using MVC Destination points and you can wait until September 15, the point chart become more advantageous.

You are correct. The best beach weather in SoCal is AUG-SEP-EARLY OCT. The water is currently 76+, about as warm as it ever is in SD/OC:

The rainfall and temperature chart is a big help. Gives a good indication of what might be best for us.
Thanks

We have a great time in that area no matter season but I prefer July and August the most. The ocean is not too cold for me in July. I love it.

But then also, I'm not deterred by "June gloom." In fact, I like how it's overcast in the Am and then the sun comes out in the afternoon. It's a great way to break up the day. We plan things like a hike or indoor activities in the AM and then hang by the pool or go to the beach in the PM.

I grew up in southern California and lived in Orange County for several years before moving. As a kid I could go in the ocean at almost any time of the year. Now I find it much too cold, even in the summer.

I think best weather is September, October.

If you're referring to my post above, there is no rainfall data. These are ocean buoy readings. Data is mostly about wave swells, but last is Sea Surface Temperature.

Here's a link: Coastal Data Information Program

I wasn't
I was referring to Ty1on's link to temp and rain.

Information on ocean buoy readings and wave swells woudn't be of any help to me, but thanks anyway.

I concur with the August - September timeframe if you don't want to be cold. June is fine if you don't need to see the sun much, and July *should* be fine although I have spent July 4th's shivering at the beach, but the weather is definitely warmer and more consistent during Aug-Sep. My advice would be different if you were planning on spending time at Disneyland which would be hot and miserable during Aug-Sep.

Thanks K
I think we've pretty much agreed on late Aug early Sept.
Thanks to all.
