best marriott lock for trading

A lot depends on what you want to try to exchange in to and the time of year you want to travel. Given the prices these days, I wouldn't buy anything less than Platinum, and that should give you enough trade power to go just about anywhere anytime, except for those super prime times at prime resorts (HHI summer, HI Christmas).

Aruba Surf Club Gold has gotten just about anything at all times. (Both parts of the unit)

The OP didn't state if the new purchase would be from Marriott or not. If it is to be from Marriott then the point system is another consideration. If not, then II or SFX will be your trading vehicles. Having said that I agree with dioxide45 that platinum is the only way to go. Frequent traders develop an appreciation for which lockoffs have a better trading pattern and are harder to trade into. I assume the same can be said for the rental market. Here's my list of favorites:
1. Aruba Surf Club-always in demand
2. Ocean Point-an island vacation in the US; just about everyone locks off
3. Grand Chateau-Las Vegas is number one destination of airline awards
4. Beach Place-on popular Ft Lauderdale beach
A couple of sleepers: Timber Lodge and Canyon Villas

If buying for trading only, you must consider MF's and price.
I would suggest:
Grand Vista platinum (3BR is you can find a cheap one)
Canyon Villas platinum (may still be given AC's. Call II and ask)
or
Manor Club Sequel platinum
Marriott's Willow Ridge platinum (Branson)
I do not like the extended platinum season of the 3rd & 4th. This could lead to you having to pay dearly to exit one day. They are already at or near $0 now.

Our Williamsburg Manor Club (red) has traded incredibly well! Very inexpensive pre-construction purchase with many incentives - that has translated to many great vacations. It is also a great location to stay as well!
