So here is a bit of background. I am a current DVC owner. Currently this is a good timeshare for my growing So. Cal family of myself, DH, DD (14 months) and hopefully soon another addition. I was casually considering to expand my timeshare options with a purchased of Monarch Grand Vacation points. After running some numbers, I am not sure that using MGV for mostly Vegas stays is a good bang for the timeshare buck.

So in you opinion, if I want a timeshare for mainly Vegas stays, what is my best option? I am familiar with DVC, MGV, and Shell point systems, but would have to be educated on others. I do know I would not want to be locked in to an assigned week but have no idea if more traditional timeshares have options to be flexible beyond your assigned week

Thanks in advance for your help!

Well, hows' about HGVC (Hilton Grand Vacation Club). They really like Vegas, too, with three TS properties -- at the Flamingo, on the Strip and at the Vegas Hilton. Its a points-based system, so if you ever want to go elsewhere, you can use your points for Hawaii, Orlando, or a dozen or so affiliates. Their non-member website is at: http://www.hiltongrandvacations.com/

Wyndham Grand Desert!
Great points system very flexible.
Amazing 2,3,4 bedroom presidential units.

The regular rooms are average but the presidentials are really fantastic!

Ditto on the Grand Desert. Availibilty is usually pretty good, and it's close to but not on the strip.

Las Vegas is overbuilt

As Orlando, Las Vegas is overbuilt and easiy to be trade in. I trade in Grand Desert, Grand View every ThankGiving week with my South Africa week. Buy a cheap TS with low MF and advance planning, you will be Ok with LV trade in

I was thinking about this advice, and I realized a few things. First, I never stay a week at a time, and second I never take trips to Vegas that are planned more than six months in advance and that would be rare. So, is a Vegas timeshare just not a good idea for how I travel there?

Many t/s systems will let you book less than a week. Some will let you split your week 3/4, others will turn it into points to spend anywhere they have a resort with availability (HGVC). I've also been spoiled with the ammenities of a t/s suite vs a simple hotel room.

The good thing about Vegas and HGVC is there is nearly always availability with little lead time at one of their three resorts. The Flamingo location is the most desirable spot on the strip of the HGVC's, so it's less available than the others but it's rare that there wouldn't be availability at one of the three. 30 days or less you can rent out units at a deeply discounted rate with cash. HGVC has worked well for us in this regard.

If you get a week somewhere else (non-vegas) and have it in RCI points, I would think you should have little problem getting something in Vegas pretty much anytime using RCI points. It just might not be in the top of the line location or unit. You likely could do RCI weeks, but you said you don't typically stay a week in Vegas.

Lastly, there's been recent threads about Grandview, very south of the strip and basically someplace I wouldn't consider because of the distance. It was pointed out however that it's a great place for teenagers with age appropriate things to do very close by (movies, bowling...). Peoples needs vary; and the various resorts in Vegas address some better than others.
