My husband needs a laptop to show picture videos for his work.

Can someone recommend a good one with 17 inch screen?

Thanks,

Anne

There are a lot of widescreen laptops on the market now but the number of 17" models is still fairly small. They come from brands you probably know: Apple, Dell, HP Compaq, Sony, Toshiba.

The Sony Vaio AX and Apple PowerBook are probably the best of the bunch and offer a better weight/size balance than the others (for a price).

The new IBM ThinkPad Z series is an excellent widescreen, probably the best Windows based PC widescreen I have seen, but does not come with a 17" screen.

Geoffb, thanks for the reply.

Circuit City has a HP for $999 (after rebates) and the Sony sell for a few hundred more.

Do you think the Sony is worth the difference?

I appreciate your help.

Sony is a premium brand so the cost will be higher, I think you do get something for the additional cost. It isn't easy to compare the HP to the Sony since they are based on different processors.

You can take a look at the Dell E1705. Dual processor cores available, true graphics device available, 17" screen, available with 7200 rpm drives, and the sucker weighs in at 8 pounds. I haven't seen or tried one myself. I'll wait till these get much lighter (with a smaller screen of course.)

Starting price is $999 with a single core processor, in a decent configuration (1G memory, 60G 5400 rpm sata hard drive, cdrw/dvd-rom combo drive), but I would update to the better display for $119.

If you pick the second configuration, it comes with a dual core processor in a decent config starting at $1127, and also includes a free dvd burner upgrade. Also, I would at least update to the higher rez display for $119. Also worth considering is the $80 processor speed bump upgrade.

All of this was found at Dell Home.

Check with Consumer Report before you spend megabucks on a laptop. We did and went with a Toshiba for my daughter when she went to college last fall. She loves it!!
Also shop around as the price varies even for the exact same laptop.

MAC Book Pro

I recently made the switch to an iMac.

I am totally converted.....The best computer ever. I know they cost more, sometimes twice as much as a PC, but the software it comes with is awesome.....

I'll never go back to a PC
