Got some Oapa(sp) fish from the Hanalei Dolphin fish market for a farewell meal the last night we were on Kauai.

Guy behind the counter started laughing when I said Oprah Fish.

Isn't cheap, $25/# but it is an incredibly tasty fish. White flaky meat. 0.75# almost too much for two of us. :D

Give it a try on your next trip.

Opah (aka moonfish) is not easily caught so when it rarely shows up for sale, we always purchase. Once in a while, it will show up on a restaurant menu. Right now the local fish readily available are broadbill swordfish and mahi mahi.

The wonderful Hawaiian fish is one of the great benefits we cherish by living here.

Ooohh! That's my favorite fish in Hawaii! It almost melts in your mouth and you don't feel stuffed after eating it (but feel content).:whoopie:

Definitely worth the price.

Kind of like Copper River Salmon. The best of the best! and only available at certain times.

Man, I'm hungry! :)

I had a mac crusted fish at Dukes when we were there in May. I can't remember the name of the fish - it was very unusual - and local as I have never heard of it before. The fish was extremely mild flavored. Any one have an idea of what it might have been?

I found it on a Hawaiian food glossary:
Monchong [mon' chong]
A somewhat exotic fish with a flaky, tender texture and mild flavor. It is served broiled, sautéed or steamed.

We ate at Duke's on Maui in May and I had the Saute'ed Mac-Crusted Opah then. Delicious...!!! On our first dinner there, I was the only one in a party of four to order it. After everyone had a taste, on the next visit all four diners ordered it. lol

It was the best meal of the trip. Every bit as good as the meals I've had at Mama's (and about 1/2 the price).
