I have a tripped booked to BC for two weeks in late Jan/25. Staying at the Sheraton.

Rental cars appear to be prohibitively expensive out of Denver that time of year, even Turo is over $1K. It is only my daughter and I for week 1, with two friends joining me for week 2.

I am pondering just taking a shuttle from the airport. I normally rent a car and get stock up near Denver. By saving money on a car rental, am I going to spend the savings on higher grocery prices in Avon?

Do I need a car in Avon?

Same questions for Breckenridge early December trip, but the car rentals are quite good at that point.

For Breckenridge, the town is pretty walkable but I like to picking up groceries in Frisco on the way in. There's a Walmart there. The closest grocery store in Breckenridge is City Market. It's too far to walk from Marriott Mountain Valley Lodge and carry groceries back but they do deliver.

There is a City Market grocery store fairly close to the Sheraton Mountain Vista(10-15 minute walk?), though I personally wouldn't want to walk it regularly in icy conditions with a bunch of groceries. There is also a Walmart, but definitely not walking distance with groceries.

If you like to ride buses, and I definitely do not, a rental car is a must.
The shuttle to Avon from Denver is not inexpensive.
Probably $100 each, each way.
If you plan to ski Vail--Avon is ten miles away, and you will be waiting for buses and dragging ski equipment regardless.
The Sheraton is NOT walking distance in cold weather to the City Market.

Try Costco for car rental?
How about flying into EGE and inquire about car rentals there?

Good Luck.

Quite helpful. Thank you.

I tried Costco and and a corporate rate with Enterprise, both still very expensive. $1200 for 2 weeks.

I would likely want to go to Vail for a day or two, so that probably pushes me to a car.

Flying into Eagle is not practical coming from Canada. Air Canada bumps you on to another carrier at Denver. It bumps the cost per person significantly. I just checked and for the same flights to Denver, adding the connection Vail/Eagle adds $950 CDN $ per person. Brutal. The difference will cover the rental. For that reason, I have always just flown into Denver.

I just got back from the Westin Riverfront. The City Market is walkable if you weren't carrying a ton. I would describe it as a decent walk. Instacart? Looked to me like EXCELLENT public transportation in Avon. I saw buses all over the place. I'm guessing you could get to Vail via the bus system.

try flying AA yyz to chicago on to EGE
same airline--rate should be better.

One thing to walk in October on a nice day--versus a winter day with snow and slush on the ground, and cold etc.
No such thing as excellent public transportation.
Especially in Avon.

Got it -- appreciate the clarification.

A few years ago we flew into Denver, took a shuttle to Frisco, picked up a rental car there, drove to Breckinridge where we stayed for a week, then drove to Beaver Creek for a week, back to Frisco to return the rental car, and then took the shuttle to the airport. It saved us a few hundred dollars at that time. Yes, we’re budget travelers.

I cannot imagine Frisco able to provide rental cars at a lower price than Denver.
The airport locations may not be the lowest price in Denver--but some location will certainly be lower than Frisco.

When I ski BC solo i take the airport train to downtown Denver (~$13) and book a ticket on the Bustang to Avon (~$27). It drops you in the Avon transit loop which is a 2 minute walk to the Sheraton. Airport return works with this too.

All the local in town buses are free - including the skier express that stops at main Vail Village and Lions Head and picks up at the Avon transit loop.

The grocery is walkable, but you could also use the local bus that stops near Sheraton ~20 minutes.
