I have a chance to eat at Sally O'Brien's or Sloppy Joes. For two people who like a quieter atmosphere which of these restaurants would be better? Thanks for your help.

Sloppy Joes is upstairs overlooking the ocean. It is attached to the Howl at the Moon Jazz & Piano Bar....(nd dueling pianos). On a weekend (& Fri) night, Joes will probably have a band....later, the music will come from the Howl at the Moon....it seems to have a variance on indoor smoking.

Joes IMO is pretty good food....the staff is super friendly, but at night, the old folks retreat (usually) to Maxs Grille....which on weekends is also very busy...(was there today...was super busy for lunch (still $3.99)

http://www.sloppyjoeslauderdale.com/

http://www.maxsgrille.net/

Joes is in the ent book, and on the www.idine.com site. (so is Sally O'Brians)

Sally O'Brians is downstairs with indoor and outdoor seating....outdoor near the BP stage, were in the early evenong, they have local schools and other places do 'events'. This stage also becomes alive in the later PM with ANOTHER live group, usually a band..

They are also listed on restaurant . com :
http://www.restaurant.com/microsite.asp?rid=313564&nv=1&nsa=1

Casablana Cafe is across the street from MBP, and don't need to use the two mentioned above, and if you are able to walk up stairs, I would try there....it quiet upstairs, its the oldest beachfront house in Ft Laud (not counting Bonnet House), and you overlook the ocean. They have temporality discontinued the 1 free lunch with one, but lunch menu prices have come down.

Can you walk? Brian has a recommend a very good restaurant in the new hotel W. It is less than 1/2 mile. One mile S is the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort....they have several restaurants, and two interior ones overlook the ocean. (THey MAY also have the outdoor BBQ - Hawaian buffett...but we saw that last year, not sure if they have the outdoor stuff this year.)

Casablanca owners run the Cafe Aruba, Capones, and are trying to reopen Yesterdays....but they have begun contracting to re-open the H2O. If this works, it will be right next to MBP, and was very popular 'quiet place' in the past. (He said in a few months...I don't think the Las Olas Beach Club rebuild of the historic Ft Laud beach hotel will be done by then.

BTW....I didn't like Sally O'Brians too much for food (staff was nice)...and that is kinda unusual...I usually don't say too many bad things about a place...I don't know why....Cheeburger seemed better (but I still contend a bit messy...even Hooters had good scenery, (but not many tables overlook the ocean).

I have to agree with the above....both your choices might be hard to come by for a nice 'QUIET" place....unless you eat about 3 to 5 PM.

Here's my dilemma. I bought the Entertainment book to get a $25 certificate to a restaurant. Now it turns out it has to be from a certain list of restaurants. Since Sally O'Brien's and Sloppy Joe's did not get such great endorsements from you all, how about the following:

Tony Pistola's
Betty's Soul food and BBQ
A La Turca
Victoria Park Restaurant.

Would you recommend any of these?

Thanks for your help.

I know two. One is Bettys....some feel better than one on the top rated BBQ places in Fl...Tom Jenkins...but...it really is famous for excellent food, not a beautiful decor (and the pricing is super, too)

Turn R from exit of MBP onto Cortez onto either (LEFT South) Birch or A1A S.

Get in R lane for turn onto Las Olas Blvd. Con't on Las Olas to either Rt one N (federal highway here), or Andrews N (Andrews is the last road where Las Olas seemingly ends (It doesn't)...riverwalk will be in way.

Go north on either street and turn L onto NE 6th Ave. Continue to I 95 overpass (name of street changes to Sistrunk Blvd. Right after the I 95 overpass, Bettys S/D on the next corner on the R.

IMO- this is where you should go:

Victoria Park Restaurant. There are no reviews on TA...but I found several elsewhere. All are positive, except as to size of place....it has under 50 seats..small and intimate.....and probably you need to call to make sure they are open and have room.

This area is where my friends daugher lived for several years...while she worked at Casablanca after her 4 years at NYU Drama (WHAT TUITION??)....it is a 1920s area, (Victoria Park) with super small houses, and a delight to drive through...used to be one of the least expensive areas in Ft Laud to get deep water dockage. (not now).

THe place looks like it might have been a house one time. I read this somewhere: (Some had 3 stars, most 4 stars...all said good to great food...and quiet..small...(i probably wouldn't fit in the place):

"...5 Stars:
A great taste of the unexpected
I went there for the first time 3 weeks ago and have gone back 5 times now. The crab cakes and their special the rack of lamb were my favorites. The waiter Wayne treated us like royalty. Well above the normal dining experience in a relaxed setting...."

I think the best way to get there is N on A1A (turn L onto Cortez.) Go to R on Sunrise Blvd. (If you go left, you'll get wet). Go past Nieman Marcus/ Burdiens/Macys on the intracoastal, and when you pass Borders (and go over the next bridge) get into the L lane. You are going to turn off Sunrise before it attaches to Rt one. at North East 20th Ave. (There S/B water on your L). Go one block..its right by 9th...about one or two blocks off Sunrise. I just saw another review..said 14 tables....I think it has 36)

One block away, the under refurbisment Shubert Gay Resort will help as a landmark.

When leaving (if still light outside), don't come back on Sunrise...go past the gates (ungarded) into Victoria Park, (sightsee) and follow around until you get to Broward Blvd.) Broward ends at Vistoria Park...Once on Broward W, turn Left and you will go a few blocks to turn L onto Las Olas...and then come back to MBP.

HINT: If there is a lot of traffic going back to A1A....don't get on it (A1A). Instead, as you cross the Intracoastal Bridge on Las Olas, STAY in the RIGHT Lane. Turn at first exit...it will appear you are going into a pink condo....but bear R and you will be in the Ft Laud Las Olas public yacht dockage. Follow this all the way around the intracoastal, (you will go under Las Olas) and at the Watertaxi Stop (on L), you will be on Cortez.....go past the Jackson Condo on R, stop at A1A S and simply go straight onto Cortez, and turn L into the garage. Just had to cross A1A S.

This area is very old...19 teens and 20s. I have not been to the restaurant, but have seen it....all of this area is old...like old downtowns were years ago. A lot has been updated, but I just want to warn you....its a super expensive area, but looks like everyman could afford.

I've read twice...I think I have the directions right
