The most frequently distributed fake coupons claim to be from Bath & Body Works, Costco, Aldi, Starbucks, and Trader Joe’s.

These promotions often times offer cards or coupons for $100 plus free merchandise, especially if you share the link on social media, according to the BBB. The coupon link often takes consumers to a third-party website that asks for the person’s information to get the coupon or voucher, which results in downloading viruses or malware.

I'm always surprised how many people repost these fake ads in Facebook. Like United is going to give away free airfare to everyone that reposts their post -- yeah, right.

Call me naive, but I just can't imagine starting the day with the thought... "How can I rip off someone today." (I guess I should be thankful my mind doesn't work that way.)

I'm afraid as long as there are those that are naive enough to be taken in by these, there will be those that will continue to exploit them. ;)

That statement fits for some retail timeshare sales too.

Not sure why you would ever need to use a fake Bed Bath and Beyond coupon. I am swimming in those as they honor expired coupons. And we get new ones in the mail at least a couple times a month.

As for the $100 in free merch offers. I get so much spam telling me I can get a gift card for doing a survey, or some other stupid thing. It never comes directly from the retailer. If it isn't caught by the spam filter, it goes to the trash.
