Upcoming refurb details from the GM's newsletter today:
It’s with great pleasure that I share an update about the upcoming refurbishment, currently scheduled for October 2015 thru December 2015 and will include refurbishment of the Gardenia Building (9100), Jasmine Building (9200) and Morning Glory Building (9400). Then, from October 2016 thru December 2016 refurbishment will occur in the Bayberry Building (9300), Live Oak Building (9500) and Sea Oat Building (9600).

Currently the refurbishment is projected to cost around $14,500,000.00, which equates to almost $57,000.00 being spent towards each of the 255 villas. This is a big number, but note that we have many projects planned inside each villa. Many of the case goods (wood furniture) have not been replaced since the resort was built. In addition, the artwork in the villas has not changed in over 10 years. I’m excited to announce all of these items will be changed during the upcoming refurbishment. As usual, the carpet, soft goods (upholstered furniture) will be replaced and the inside of each villa will be painted.

In addition to these important projects, we plan to make major changes to the master bathroom by removing the whirlpool tubs and replacing them with a larger shower. The plans also call for both vanities to be replaced in the guest and master bathrooms with new cabinetry and quartz counters. New comfort height toilets replacing the previous toilets will be installed in both bathrooms.

Other changes include the adjustment of the living room furniture and television location to create more of an open flow from the kitchen to the living room. The dining room table and chairs will be replaced. One of the nightstands and the large chair in the master bedroom will be replaced with a desk and small chair and a small chair will also be added in the guest bedroom. The beds in both bedrooms will be placed on platforms instead of frames, which will prevent items from being placed under the bed. Each villa window will have plantation shutters installed for a more southern feel.

The foyer will also receive a face lift with a new coat rack and a bench for sitting to remove your shoes. All lighting will transition to LED lights and new fixtures will be installed in almost every part of the villa. The dining room chandelier will be replaced with a ceiling fan and the bedroom ceiling fans will be changed to a more modern style. In addition to all these great changes, the Board agreed to replace all kitchen appliances with new stainless steel units.

There are many plans the Board and Management Team have reviewed over the past two to three years leading up to this project and I am happy to share conceptual drawings for the living room, master bedroom and guest bedroom. Please note that these are conceptual drawings and the actual outcome may vary slightly in its appearance.

The pictures are in the attached pdf. I LOVE that the tub in the master is being converted to a SurfWatch-like oversized shower, and that the tv in the living area is being moved so that the focus on the back wall will now be on the view outside. Overall I like the scheme but am reserving judgement until I see a refurbed unit. :)

Thanks for posting. Is there plans for the kitchen? I might have missed this. I also have not seen rolling doors in the Master to divide the shower from bed area. Looks nice and will be fun to see.

Kitchen cabinets stay, but new stainless steel appliances. All lighting, including kitchen will be new.

We were at Barony for 2 weeks recently and the GM covered the update in his morning owner's update.

Erac is very personable and visible around the property.

I'll be there in May and will try to get to the Owner's Meeting - always like hearing from Erac and I'm guessing by then they'll have a planning board all put together.

If the master headboard is what I think it is, we have a similar framed map of the area hanging in our family room here. I also like the barn doors between the master bed and bath, might be something to recommend at SurfWatch for their next refurb. :)

For our meeting there wasn't a planning board. In Erac's presentation, there were pictures of the various items. Looks like the exact same pictures that were included in the GM's Newsletter.

I agree with you about the barn doors. I'm glad they're not leaving it open like Surfwatch.

Barony Renovation photos

Here at Hilton Head for 9 nights-------first two nights this current weekend at Barony in recently renovated Morning Glory building, then (this morning) to our first love, Grande Ocean, for a week.

We requested second floor oceanside at Barony, overlooking the shady & beautiful interior, which we like best. Very tranquil, very lovely, and we have a fairly good view of ocean in distance from an oversized balcony. We've stayed in oceanfront villas several times and it's OK, but we like oceanside better, which we own.

Limited photos follow of Barony's kitchen, living room, and the fantastic new shower. Actually it's my favorite shower among the "big three" of Grande Ocean, Barony, and Surfwatch.

Grande Ocean's overall bathroom size is largest and has a decent sized walk-in shower and lots more countertop space and closet.

Surfwatch's walk-in shower space is very large----we call it the "car wash", and it's really too big, with wasted space at one end for no reason, with too many nozzles and quite weak water pressure. Also soft water which I despise (other resorts have hard water).

Barony's 6.75' x 3.75' shower is far superior, imho, and when we re-do our home shower this year, we'll take some ideas and do it similarly. Particularly like the gorgeous glass doors and the mechanism (silent, smooth, substantial, awesome), the tile colors and pattern layout, and the limited but necessary hardware. The rain shower head has very strong water pressure and taking a shower is great. The room is bright, cheerful, clean and sleek. Double sinks and cabinets are very nice, too---white theme, similar bright duel lighted mirrors (around periphery) like Grande Ocean has, but Barony's mirrors have a single dimmer switch. You can see partial views of the bathroom sinks/mirrors in the various shower door reflections! Look for those!!!

Beautiful dual barn doors come together to separate master BR from bathroom, and there's a separate barn door closure for the large private toilet/storage area. I like the layout a lot. Grande Ocean's bathroom layout prevents a similar shower in the future, even if they remove the jacuzzi tub, unless they knock out a wall and somehow make a storage area or something of the existing (slightly smaller) shower, which bums me out a bit----would dearly love to have Barony's shower at GO! I'll survive, but.....

Barony's kitchen and bathrooms have new tile floors, beautiful. The living room's look has completely changed. Similar sectional sofa, two small ottomans, nice chairs, new fixtures and lamps, etc., etc.......very good-looking carpet (best of the big three)....and everything is VERY neutral-----off-white furniture with a grayish/brown/taupe colored carpet-----love it. All contribute to a serene, bright, modern look. Frankly it's one of the few times we hated to leave Barony (we're owners there also but trade 80%).

When we entered Grande Ocean's obviously larger villa this morning (check-in at 10 am, thank you staff), however, after only two nights at Barony, we immediately were struck with the big difference and feeling of space. We knew we were "home". But we will definitely stay at Barony if we need extra Hilton Head time and GO isn't available.

Anyway, here are a few limited photos below. Didn't spend time doing bedrooms because the look is cleaner and more modern but otherwise no big changes.

We were in Morning Glory in January and again in February. We loved the redo and agree about the shower! We are leaving Sat. for another return to HH. Just can't get enough of that place! This time we will be staying in Shelter Cove, which we call our " hidden gem". Love all the nature and sunsets! Also joining us will be family from Washington State. Can't wait to show off HH to them!

We have a wedding in late April in Savannah, and will be staying at Shelter Cove's Harbour Point and driving over. Can't wait. Haven't stayed at HP before, but we're well familiar with it due to friends' stays when we visited. So far this year we've been to Hilton Head 4 times, and will also be back 3 weeks in June. Never tire of it.

Sitting here now at Grande Ocean with a bottle of wine and watching movies. Looking forward to an early wake up and coffee and then a great breakfast out. No agenda, probably a day full of bike rides to various spots, already rented the bikes. Weather is awesome....mid-60s and up into 70s, sunny and beautiful forecast with one day of rain next Thursday, I think.

Share your enthusiasm for the Barony renovations. Truly a nice job.

Is Morning Glory the only oceanfront building that was renovated? Makes me wonder how many owners will request that building and be disappointed if they get Sea Oats!

This past Oct-Dec the two gardenview buildings and the one oceanfront/oceanside building were done; next Oct-Dec the two oceanside and the one remaining oceanfront/oceanside building will be done. Owners should understand if they're not placed in a renovated unit this year because they've been great about notifying us of the process.

Note threads are being merged to prevent duplicate posts related to this round of refurb.

Hey Marty, thanks for the pictures! We'll be there early next month - I'm still reserving judgment until I see them. Looking at your pics I don't think I like that they didn't change the kitchen cabinets (could have painted/refaced them) and that panel replacing the cabinet over the stove looks odd. I would have preferred that the living area chairs have more color/print in the fabric, and I'm not sure about that tv-cabinet - it looks like Ikea but maybe in person it's more substantial? Other than that I love the layout and cleaner lines, love the new shower. :)

Can we get you to do some work please? Revisit this thread and let us know there what if any golf access info is in the current Welcome Packets at the resorts? Thanks!

That refurb is beautiful. I am so glad that they've moved away from the heavy flora prints of the early 'aughts.

Maybe it's just me, but I am *loving* the coat rack and bench in the foyer. We tend to go to HHI in the off-season, which means bringing everything from heavy coats, to raincoats, to light polartecs. Multiply this by three or four people, and that a lot of layers to find space for in the utility closet! (We've used the vacuum cleaner as a coat rack in Marriott resorts before.) And the foyer is always home to the "shoe flotilla" of sandy sneakers, wet flip flops, etc. Having a dedicated coat rack and a bench for putting those shoes on and off will be a bonus!

We first traded into Barony on New Year's Eve 1999. My how the resort has changed since then!

*sips her Ensure because she suddenly feels real old*

JME,

Always enjoy reading your informative posts. I would appreciate it if you shared your thoughts on the Pros and Cons of Harbour Point after your stay there. Curious to hear your opinion.

Thanks again.

We stayed at Harbour Point back in December and liked it very much, will be happy to return. We were in the Osprey Building, third or fourth floor in the center. The Broad Creek view was gorgeous! Just outside our windows/off the balcony were a couple trees that probably restrict the view a bit during full foliage but in December they didn't. I thought it was perfect because we had hundreds of Cedar Waxwings migrating through on a couple of the days, a first sighting and very exciting for me to be so up close and personal. I love Bird Nirvana and am happy to say that the HP location is very similar to SurfWatch in that respect. Another bonus for that time of year, we could see Christmas lights across the water as well as the Dove Street Festival of Lights to the right down at the new public park at Shelter Cove.

It's obviously an older resort but I think our unit had been recently refurbed? The kitchen is very small compared to Barony or SW but it's easily workable, with nice new stainless appliances. Standing in front of the fridge you can turn around and access the laundry closet so that's kind of a tight fit but most of the time you'll have those sliding doors closed anyway.

The living/dining area is smaller than Barony or SW but again, very comfortable with the balcony - and great view - just outside. Entering the bedrooms you go through a doorway from the living area with the second bedroom (2 twin beds) on the left, second bath straight ahead, and the master suite on the right. Both baths had been nicely updated with, I think, a soaker tub in the master replaced by another version of these big showers? It was more like SW's though, than Barony's, with an uncovered opening and stationary tiled wall - no sliding or closing doors. The master bedroom itself is very small but has two decent-size closets plus an open alcove with shelves for all your gear, more than enough storage throughout. There's no balcony access from the master but there's a big picture window with a view of the creek.

I know HP and Sunset Pointe have a few different unit layouts; this was our only visit so I don't know how this unit compares to others onsite.

The property is really nice with the pool, a very nice pavilion along Broad Creek and a boardwalk jutting into it. We also enjoyed the (new?) outdoor fire pit area one night and used the updated grill area quite a bit. Despite it being off-season the Activity Schedule was full and the Bike Barn looked to have a well-stocked selection. Parking isn't just outside each building, like what we're used to at Barony and SW, but instead there's one large parking lot on the road-side of the resort. It's not a very large footprint anyway so it wasn't a problem.

We ran around a whole lot during that stay, off-property most of the time to take care of things with our new home. When it was time to leave I was sad to go. I always am sad to leave the island but leaving there, it felt like we missed out on time spent enjoying what the resort had to offer. Next time. :)

Thanks for that.

Will do, but I'm sure I probably won't change my opinion much, as I already like it. It's not my FAVORITE Hilton Head MARRIOTT resort, but it's a nice location, has a different but charming villa layout, it's quiet, and it's got a very underrated view across the inland waterway, which I find beautiful. (Very similar situation for Harbour Club, which IS one of my favorites--- also a different layout, similar view, also quiet, etc., but better location.) But I'm looking forward to my stay. I think early-morning coffee (or evening wine) on that balcony might be as good as, or better than, most.

I'll maybe have more specifics so I'll definitely share my thoughts. As you know, Marriott has 8 resorts on HH Island, and they are ranked differently by almost everyone. And every opinion is valid based on what each person finds personally attractive.

If I had to pick one person's ranking, however, I'd say I respect BocaBoy's immensely--- his keen sense of things is always right on the money. And he should know, he stayed at every single one last year. His ranking is probably the most logical and well thought out.

My ranking might differ an a couple of resorts, but my reasons on those don't in any way supersede his. It's more a matter of liking blue or red, or blondes or brunettes, etc. I might, for instance, like one resort because it reminds me of a place I stayed in my childhood, which would be meaningless to him, and I might take those types of things into account. That was just an analogy. What seems kind to the eye may vary between individuals, but on the major differences we are close.

Good eye, Susan, we agree.

Funny but ALL the furniture and furnishings in the new renovations ANYWHERE look like IKEA and Home Goods, and imho, that's not a compliment, so I'm with you. I think it's a bottom-line/cost-effective move for the most part, as none of it feels substantial or overly comfortable. It's obviously an effort at "clean and modern", but sometimes the quality suffers in what the decorators(?) seem to gravitate towards.

I find it absolutely hilarious (and somewhat disingenuous) that a couple of years ago we received "owner questionnaires" from our homeowners association as to our preferences and opinions for the upcoming renovations/refurbs at Grande Ocean, yet EVERY SINGLE thing done was a carbon copy of Surfwatch's.

All subsequent refurbishments at the "big three" look alike. Sectionals, small ottomans, a "missing" end table, similar dining tables, same IKEA style furniture, similar drapes, similar fixtures-----only differences were the color schemes and carpet patterns (lines or waves or stripes). And, strangely enough (!!!), Grande Vista refurbs/renovations are going the same cookie-cutter direction. I think the questionnaires were a ludicrous joke. The people must have been laughing when they exchange the secret memos for the upcoming changes, and I'll BET COLD CASH that the same "decorating team" travels to each location for each new job. Same manufacturers, same everything, but with slightly different boxes checked on same page.

Wow, thanks for that great review of Harbour Point.

We recently purchased a unit in the Osprey building, and one in the Pelican building. Ironically we have never been to Hilton Head, which probably sounds crazy. But from the descriptions here on TUG from the hardcore Marriott folks, some of them who have even helped me via PM, email, or over the phone I am confident it will be a great place for some of our family vacations in 2017 and beyond.

My goal is to eventually purchase a Grande Ocean Gold OF, but the descriptions of the natural beauty of Shelter Cove area from those who have stayed there like yourself really won us over. We are also big into biking so we like the central location Harbour Point offers.

JME,

Curious, at Barony do you have an opinion on owning or staying in Barony Beach with garden views (Jasmine / Gardenia)? I understand they are already renovated and I confirmed with the resort they have the same décor your pictures show.

If there is already a thread on this, my apologizes in advance.

My goal is to eventually purchase a Grande Ocean Gold OF, but the descriptions of the natural beauty of Shelter Cove area from those who have stayed there like yourself really won us over. We are also big into biking so we like the central location Harbour Point offers.

I know a lot of TUGgers prefer the Sea Pines end of HHI but like you, we prefer being more mid-island so that it's an easy trek either way to enjoy all that the island has to offer. The resorts in Shelter Cove have been on My List for years now because of the setting and I'm glad we've finally had a chance to get there - one more stay during the summer in order to see the Shelter Cove fireworks while onsite is still on the list.

One comparison that TUGgers who own at a few of the Florida properties is, the view of the ocean compared to the intercoastal waterway - they talk about nighttime views and how on the ocean you don't see anything but on the intercoastal there's all kinds of activity. Now having stayed at Shelter Cove, I think of the HH oceanfront resorts v. the Broad Creek resorts in the same way. Oceanfront at HH is AWESOME (and will always be Don's favorite) but I loved staying on Broad Creek, seeing the daytime bird/boating activity and the nighttime lights. Especially the Christmas lights all up and down the banks - it was really beautiful. Add in the birds? I could stay there for weeks and never be bored.

I hope when you get there it's everything you want it to be. :)

JME,

Curious, at Barony do you have an opinion on owning or staying in Barony Beach with garden views (Jasmine / Gardenia)? I understand they are already renovated and I confirmed with the resort they have the same décor your pictures show.

If there is already a thread on this, my apologizes in advance.

Never any reason for apologies-----questions and answers are repeated often on this amazing site, and simply no problem.

The Garden section has pros and cons. The cons are a longer walk to the beach, and that's about it. There might be a perceived feeling of isolation from the rest of the Barony resort, but I personally don't feel it. We have stayed there and liked it just fine, but actually own 2 oceanside weeks.

The pros are that it has a fantastic "new" pool and lounge chair section surrounding it, all with beach sand rather than concrete----pretty cool! The large pool has one end which is zero entry, and also a kids' play area with water features, a water slide, and an adjacent covered area with table tennis, outdoor TVs, and picnic tables.

The Garden section villas are slightly larger than the oceanside and oceanfront ones. I suppose most would rather own oceanside/oceanfront because of beach proximity, but for kids, the Garden section has many plusses that the other sections do not. The villas themselves are just as gorgeous as the others, no drop-off there!!! There is also a parking garage underneath, like the other sections, so "floor 1" is elevated and hence the second level above the ground.

I would have no problem owning or staying there. Before ever purchasing, however, I always highly recommend staying there or at least staying at Barony "somewhere" and viewing all sections firsthand-----the "due diligence" admonition is never a wasted one. The value of a reduced upfront purchase price might rightly swing someone to the Garden section.

SueDonJ / JME,

Thanks again for your input. Appreciate it. Usually I just lurk and learn from the Marriott owners.

Hope you both enjoy your upcoming travel arrangements in 2016.

We'll be staying there in late May and have just invited my sister-in-law and family to join us for 2 days before they check into their week at Grande Ocean.

Was wondering, did they replace the soaker tub in the guest bedroom area. I can't tell from looking at the guest bathroom pictures. Hope so, cause they take up so much space.

This is a good question because the second bedroom and bath configurations are different in the gardenview buildings compared to the oceanside and oceanfront buildings.

In the oceanside/oceanfront units the second bedroom/bath has two queen size beds and the typical tub/shower combo unit, which I don't believe was scheduled to be changed. In the gardenview buildings the second bath has the same soaker tubs as in the master bath - I would expect those to have been changed out also but don't know for sure. While we're on the subject I'd like to know if that second bedroom has a king-size bed or the two queens? Thanks!
