Interesting. This might well be one of those areas where you're not going to beat Amazon for national trends / tastes with physical locations, but you certainly CAN offer something tailored to your area that you can't get online. I still find it easier to browse a bookstore for new authors or books than to look on Amazon. I also get to skip a lot of the shipping damage Amazon does cause they no longer really pack books.
That all said - aside from books as collectibles, I'm probably 99.9% all digital because it's usually cheaper and doesn't end up with me stacking myself out of my home with books I have to do something with once I read them. I probably know most of the solutions to physical books but - I have to make a special trip that I never manage to do to donate them to a library book sale, I have to do extra work to try and sell online, I really dislike just throwing books in the trash. Much easier to not have a physical object at all.

"Barnes & Noble Education (BNED) shares have slid from a split-adjusted $34.70 per share, to around $7.11 per share, since the aforementioned developments. The jury’s still out whether a BNED comeback is possible. It’s unclear whether the company’s digital pivot won’t simply cannibalize its declining bricks-and-mortar operation. Irrespective of whether it ultimately pans out, shares appear to be on track to first make another move back into penny stock territory." https://finance.yahoo.com/news/7-doomed-stocks-one-way-113000382.html

They had story time for the kids, when my grandkids were little. The Starbucks in the store was nice, too. Fresh coffee, a comfortable chair to look closely at physical books for purchase, those are things that make a store better than online, and those to me are it.
Rick used to drop me off at Barnes and Noble for a few hours, while he was cleaning chimneys. I could answer my phone in the store and enjoy some hours away from the truck. I miss that quiet time.
Our B & N is a nice store with seating , Starbucks, occasional local authors appearances, children's area with occasional programs. Very lovely atmosphere with helpful employees if you need something.

We have a beautiful library, complete with comfy chairs and a fireplace, off the lobby at the old folks home. And a paperback library upstairs. I still buy lots of books on Amazon but then donate them once read. We have an online catalog that tells us what’s in the library, and in the case of hard bound books whether or not it has been checked out. In theory I shouldn’t ever have to buy a Stephen King, John Connelly or John Grisham book again — I put them in my Amazon cart so I remember a new book has been published, and then check our library instead of buying. Doesn’t mean I don’t still have over a dozen purchased books on my shelf waiting to be read two paragraphs at a time at bedtime. Best thing about the odd night here and there where I can’t sleep is I can get several chapters read at a time!
