I live a little north and east of Baltimore, and just let me say that traffic on the expressways and the tunnel system has been awful the past couple of weeks. Like more than doubling commute times, and that's not even considering the people that took the Key Bridge to work.

Even out here in the sticks...
I sometimes wonder if all the people on the road need to be there.
Couldn't some of 'em stay off the road and make life easier for the rest?
People: Why are you clogging up the streets at 10am or 2pm?

We lived in the Tidewater Virginia area and we have two international port terminals. The truck traffic have double all during day and night hours on our interstate highways. It is a mess.

Ship Owners Are Trying Everything To Avoid Paying Up For Baltimore Bridge Collapse

Richard
Congress needs to update shipping and cruise legislation. Legislation for both industries were written over 100 years ago and they needs to be updated to meet new modern shipping and cruise standards.IMHO.

Examples: Modern cargo shipping containers ship can carry over a thousand shipping containers.

Cruise ships can carry between 600 to 7000 passengers and this does not including the cruise crew staff.

Update how? "You may not run into a bridge."
"If you do, you will be held 100% liable."

Perhaps a program of inspecting ship power
systems is needed (like for gas pumps).

IMHO, some of that infrastructure $$ should
be used to update bridge protection, like with
concrete barriers or a funnel system.

"If you do and it falls down, you are 100% liable."
That would be a start. But my guess would be Pedro is referencing the 1851 Limitation of Liability Act that could limit liability to about $43 million.

The Jones Act in the cruise industry is also outdated.

The Army Corp of Engineers, The Coast Guard and all the contractors working on this project are during an excellent job. IMHO

According to local radio (WTOP, Washington, DC), a 35 foot channel is temporarily open allowing ships to pass in and out of the Port of Baltimore. Thirty-five feet is enough for cruise ships, car carriers, etc.

If they can really open the main channel by end of May - that's pretty impressive really - from late March when the bridge collapsed to late May - that's only two months time.

It may take anywhere between 8 to 10 years to rebuild this bridge according to some highway and bridge engineers with VDOT.

And yet from this article posted above, the official timeline is "just over four years". Like I said earlier in this thread, it is amazing how fast they can actually build a bridge in an emergency case like this. And if it follows the I-35 collapsed bridge rebuild timeline, it will be done in even less time than originally planned.

Change of prediction.
IMHO, they can build and design a new bridge under five years, if the politician stays out of the building process.
The key is opening the shipping lanes for military and cargo lanes.
