School starts here Aug. 14th summer seems to have flown by once again. My kids are both anxious for their social school life to start again and bummed because it also means Homework. For me it means back to work. Looking forward to the paycheck again not looking forward to the 4:45 rise and shine. Went to my first back to work meeting yesterday met the new boss and all the new employees in our department. We are one of the fortunate ones that are not having lay offs but instead we are growing!!! Our department went from 10 drivers to 21 plus added a new management position. I am also off to our CSEA Union convention in Las Vegas tomorrow it will be interesting to hear what all will be happening there as well. The sleepy summer days are quickly coming to an end.

Ours starts August 19th here. I can't believe how fast this summer has flown!!

I go back to school Aug. 27th; but my students don't start until Sept. 2nd. (Most schools in this area don't start until after Labor Day). However, due to construction at two schools in our home district, my own children don't start until Sept. 8th. My oldest leaves for college on Aug. 20th, with classes starting on the 25th.

Some schools here (Arizona) are starting this Monday - Aug. 4! The rest start the following week. Too early.

We have some year around schools and some are on the regular schedule. Both of them are off the first three weeks of August. All schools, regardless of which schedule they have, go back on August 25th.

While we have year round schools in the Los Angeles Unified District, the non year round schools all start on the day after Labor Day, Monday, Sept 2.

It's always been interesting to me to find schools that start in August. I grew up in the system where all schools started after Labor Day. But I have been in personal contact recently with a school in Massachusetts that starts mid August and another school on the Big Island that starts August 11.

Things have changed here...I grew up here but we never started until after Labor Day.

I work in a school. Staff goes back the day after Labor Day, we have 2 kid free days of meetings and setup, and the kids come in on Thursday, which is Sept 4 this year.

I went back this past Monday (July 28th) and yesterday was the first day for our students. We started a week earlier than last year but we will have a week-long break in September. I've been teaching 17 years and we have always started in August. It just seems to be getting earlier and earlier in August. BTW, as my user name indicates, I am in Georgia.

Our kids start back the 14th, teachers start the 11th and I have a meeting on the 8th. We used to start later, but the high school (we're a unified district) wanted the semester to end before Christmas break. We do get off earlier, (June 6), so I'm finding it is easier to get some timeshare trades in June and I like that.

Up here in Perrysburg, we've been going back the last Wed in August since 1978(thanks to the Great Blizzard earlier that yr).

My boys head back on 8/27. I hate back to school shopping, and I'm really not into this "generic" list for 6th graders. I'll find out what he needs after the first day(all the school supplies will be gone by then replaced with trick or treat candy and costumes).:wall:

Our Catholic HS's here in the Toledo area all switched to that schedule a few years ago. Had to listen to SIL, who thought it was against the law to start school 8/12 or so. :hysterical:

I remember that blizzard! That was my junior year in HS. They changed it at our school sometime after I graduated that next year.

I am in Cincinnati! They didn't get that snow here! It only went as far south as Vandalia. Although last year, we did use all of our snow days and had to make 1 up.

I have a friend in Michigan that said that their school moved their start date back to after Labor Day a couple of years ago in an effort to help extend the tourism season.

Our local schools go back on August 19th. My son was happy to find out his college is on quarters and they don't start until September 25th, so he is enjoying a nice break before he leaves to 'begin adulthood.'

In Bakersfield California Teachers go back August 13 and Students return on August 18.

I live in Georgia. The school districts near me start all different times.!!! On my commute to work at the bank I drive thru 4 counties!! (21 miles). Where I live, Cherokee County Schools all go back on Monday, Aug 4th, Bartow County goes back the 7th, Cobb County goes back on the 11th and Paulding County (where my branch of the bank is )goes back on August 18th.

Yep they actually passed a law in MI about when schools could start. I remember when it was the thing to spend Labor Day weekend "up North".

Cedar Point, Kalahari and Great Wolf waterparks were lobbying the other year about the same sort of law here in OH. Looks like it didn't get anywhere.

The tourism lobby was successful in Minnesota - with a state law that restricts school starts to after Labor Day. (It's also a hold over from the days when kids were needed at home on the farm to help finish harvesting.) Another harbinger or fall, the Minnesota State Fair, wraps up that weekend, too. Since our summer is so short, and August is usually nicer than June here, it's actually good for most people. My daughter heads off to college that same weekend. It will be quiet around the house!

We start school after Labour Day - Sept 2nd - early this year (for the kids anyway). I can't imagine school starting the beginning of August. It would devistate the whole resort and summer camp industry up here.

A lot of the San Diego schools start back on August 25th.

My kids go back Wed Sept 3rd. It is early this year for them, as labor day is normally later.

I can't imagine them going back in August. That must be why we get get trades to Hilton Head and Hawaii always around the last week of August.

Kids that start much earlier - when does their school year end?

We start this year on September 4th.
Last day is June 20th and HS graduation is June 23 (DS graduates this year so important to know this).

Seriously... it is in some states. For example, in Florida it is. There is this program called Save the Summers. All public schools cannot start by a certain date in August. Do a google search on Save the Summer and you'll be surprised on what is out there.

Our school district wants to have an early start date in August anytime around 6th to 10th. Most parents are against it as it is very hot here in August. Over 100 degree days are the norm. The school district decided to postpone the vote for another year. I'm not sure what us parents will do but we might do a Save the Summer program. Most in my area would rather go to school through June and start after Labor Day.
