Seven of us left Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport on July 12. We arrived in Cancun around 2:30. The lines at the airport weren't too bad for that time of the day.
I had arranged for private transfer through Thomas Moore. The driver was outside and waiting when we arrived. I had also pre-registered everyone and ordered groceries before we had left. Four of us were staying at the Royal Islander and the other three at the Royal Caribbean. When we arrived we were given an envelope with our keys and went straight to our villas. Our groceries were already there. We were having a cold beer on the balcony by 4:00.
The weather was great the first week. It only rained a little during one night and very early one morning. There was no problem finding a chair and umbrella by the pool if you got there by 11:00 -11:30. The pool at the Royal Islander seemed a little more crowded than the RC pool. Many people left the pool area during happy hour. Lots of places to sit then.
The beach was very narrow and rocky. We did find a spot where we could get in and swim. We spent one whole day on the beach. The water was very calm for most of the week.
Four of our group went home on Saturday and two more came for week 29. We had an exchange for this week at the RC. We did get the beach front villa that was on our II exchange.
Then there was Dolly! High winds and lots of rain for a couple of days. The waves were very large and the beach in front of the RC was no more. The Royal employees were very busy removing all of the chairs from the beach and stacking them on the grass in front of beach front units. The steps down to the beach were roped off. All of the turtle eggs had to be dug up and moved. Several beach palapas collapsed and had to be rescued out of the water. Someone's sailboard and mast floated up to shore.
The weather cleared up and was nice again for the rest of the week. There was a lot of seaweed floating in and the employees were busy raking and burying it. When we left of the 26th, all of the beach chairs were still piled up on the grass.
Prices have gone up in Cancun just like at home. Rate of exchange was 10.1 when we arrived and down to 9.7 before we left.
We only cooked in our villa once for breakfast. No complaints about the places we ate. We had some pretty good meals. Hacienda Sisal, Royal Mayan Palapa, Tradewinds take-out, J.C. Captain's, Royal Islander (BBQ and pasta buffet) La Casa de las Margaritas, Captain's Cove and Paco's Tacos were some of the places we ate at. The band Flash Back is still playing three nights a week at Pancho's and Willy's. They are a very good band.
The Thomas Moore driver was right on time to take us to the airport. The Delta lines were very long. We were glad that we were flying NWA. There were only a couple of people ahead of us.
Another good trip to Cancun!
