We're at WDW this week.

We arrived just in time on Sat for the "cold" weather (low teens = mid-fifties), but it's warming up now (high teens = mid-sixties), and looks like it be back to normal tomorrow (high twenties = low eighties).

As some people have noted, don't trust your GPS to find the address -- it takes you up in to an Intrawest property where the road stops at a gate instead of coming through to the WDW property in the distance.

The property is very nice looking, definitely different than Westin Mission Hills. Much more deserty.

Got a nice welcome present -- a little wooden case with 6 or 8 types of nibbles in it (nuts, chocolates, dried/candied fruits, biscuits, etc).

We're in building 3, 2nd floor. The new construction is in the building next to us -- they seem to have pretty much finished the exterior, and we've seen lots of workers going in. We can't hear any real construction noise inside or outside.

The common facilities look brand new.

Our unit is showing some small signs of wear-and-tear already -- scuff marks on the baseboards (from vacuuming I suspect) on the mantels (people using them for coffee tables?) and in the kitchen (glass top stove with scratches on it, sink has some scratches in it, etc).

Some people have commented that the units are dark. They definitely don't get direct sunlight coming in, but I didn't find them that bad.

The smaller side of the 2BR lock-off is larger than at some other properties. I would treat it as a small 1BR suite instead of a studio, as there is a separate living/dining area with a door to the bedroom area instead of being one large space.

The larger side of the 2BR lock-off is a pretty decent size. The layout in general is the same as Westin Mission Hills.

The wired internet is awfully slow.

We attended the Owner's Update today. Offered 5,000 SPG points. Looks like they were giving out 10,000 SPG points to non-owners.

As always, we find the sales people quite disorganized. They really should have a printout of your "portfolio" before you arrive, instead of first going "oh, you already own, oh, you own here, oh, you own a few other locations, oh, you're 5 Star Elite" and then going off for 10 minutes to get a printout.

The rep asked how we used our ownership, and just general chit-chat. She talked about the changes in the SPG program as of Mar 1st. She realized quite quickly that there was no opportunity to sell us anything. She eventually went off to get the supervisor to present pricing, etc, which lead to another 10min wait.

The supervisor was quite pushy (surprise, surprise) in trying to sell something/anything. The offer was $20K for a WMH EY Gold season ("only one left!"), or $15K for a WDW EOY Platinum season. 60K bonus SPG points, plus 4x options to purchase 80K SPG points at $1550ea in the next 2 years. As there wasn't sufficient new incentive to purchase, and some of what they were saying made no sense in our reality (only on Planet Salesperson), we passed.

We heard the term "Ten Star Elite" for the second time now (both partners each being Five Star Elite) in the last year and a bit.

I expressed some concerns about the "devaluation" of the SPG Platinum feature of Five Star Elite membership as of the Mar 1st changes in the program.

I asked about future construction. Supposedly they're putting forward a new proposal for WKORVNN for 2 years from now. There is no plan to start construction at Aruba, but they may extend the hotel? They're continuing on at WDW.

I was going to ask about the reservation / allocation process for units at WDW, but figured that these were not the right people.

Thanks for posting this, I read it with interest. I purchased a resale here recently and I am waiting on it to close. I stopped by and saw the property last year when we were in Palm Desert. It's nice and new Westin quality as expected, but I found it very lacking in vegetation - very deserty - and the contemporary cut of the buildings has no charm or coziness. It reminded me of the Scottsdale Four Seasons. Nevertheless it is modern and new, and it would be great for us for spring break. Perhaps the vegetation grows later, maybe they just planted it and they are waiting for it to grow :)

jim, ... "What was devalued from 5 Star?"

Read this Starwood thread to the end.

http://tugbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=163911

YYJMSP and some others believe that recent SPG changes creating Platinum for Life and Platinum Suite Award Upgrades (reserved before arrival rather than granted on arrival subject to availability; limited to 10 days of stays per year) will make it harder to get a regular Platinum upgrade at SPG hotels for 5 Star Elites. They refer to the creation of these categories of SPG Platinum, open to all Platinum SPGs, to be a devaluation of 5 Star Elite benefits. Platinum SPG comes with and is a benefit of 5 Star Elite - as long as you keep 5 Star Elite status.

I don't think so. It's what TUG is all about. Salty

10* Elite

So what does one get as 10* Elite? Let me know when you find out!

This appears to be their standard term for putting both husband and wife each independently at Five Star Elite.

You each get SPG Platinum. Whoo-hoo...

Which reminds me, one of the salesperson's statements was that there is a 2000 person limit on SPG Platinums being given out by SVO, and they're currently at 1865 (or something like that), but that we were grandfathered in, so we weren't subject to the limit. Of course, take this with a grain of salt ("buy now!")

They have had that limit of 2000 for years now (at least 2006)

If both spouses travel for work (or just vacation separately), the double platinum is a great benefit. Expensive, yes. But I want my own upgrade, dang it, and Gold just isn't going to cut it!

Great write-up. We have avoided owners updated the last couple of visits - too much other stuff to do, more than any other reason. So it is nice to have access to the important stuff (not the sales pitch). Still hoping for Cabo and Aruba, though we stopped holding our breath for either. :)

If you and your spouse both travelled for work, would you really want 8-10 weeks of timeshare on top of that?

That doesn't make sense - if they haven't reached the limit yet, there is no reason for you to be grandfathered in. You were just one of the first 1865 people. And do they mean Platinum via timeshare purchases, or by any manner? I can't imagine they tell someone that stayed 50 nights in a a year that they didn't make platinum level because they hit their quota. I think if I was at that owner's update, I could have put the salesperson on the hot seat for a change! :p

Do they not extend the platinum benefits to the "non-platinum" spouse if the platinum spouse isn't there? When I make ressies for myself, I always do it through the SPG website, which is officially my DH's account, then make a note on the reservations that, "My wife, spencersmama" will be checking in." I usually get upgraded more than he does, but I think that's because I'm sweeter to the front desk clerks than he is. ;)

"if they haven't reached the limit yet, there is no reason for you to be grandfathered in."

To provide some context, YYJMSP is grandfathered in because YYJMSP is already 5 Star Elite. Salty

I know that YYJMSP is 5* Elite, but it's the grandfathered in phrase that is throwing me. That implies, at least to me, that Starwood changed the rules sometime after the rules were initially set up and YYJMSP needs an exemption from said (changed) rules. But, if they set a limit of 2000 and have only reached 1865, YYJMSP does not need to be grandfathered. He meets the initial criteria for inclusion. It's splitting hairs, but to me the "grandfathered in" statement makes it sound like Starwood is doing YYJMSP a big favor, when in fact YYJMSP paid for and earned his right as both a 5* and Platinum. He's doing Starwood the favor!

Doesn't sound like that to me. But, YYJMSP is 5 Star Elite. And he was told that even if the 2,000 is held as a cap or the amount of StarOptions are increased, YYJMSP need not worry because he's already there.

You are right, of course, YYJMSP had to pay money to get there. The 5 Star Elite benefits and SPG Platinum benefits are not given away. Pay your money, stay 5 Star Elite and you will have the benefits. Promise made; promise kept - even if things change later for others. Salty

It's just salesperson-speak to try to get your spouse on the road to 5 Star Elite, so that they don't miss out on the limited time ("buy now!") opportunity to get their own SPG Platinum card before they run out ("but here's a special deal just for you to get around the limit, but you have to buy now!"), etc, etc, etc.

It's a bunch of crap of course. :D

My experience is generally they don't seem to differentiate between the member and the spouse.

Once again, I'm sure that the limit and grandfathering, etc, are all salesperson speak that translates to "buy now!" to get you to, well, buy now.

One of the tactics of the sales manager was to go away, and come back to say, well you bought your last units just over a year ago, but hey, we can offer you this special pricing (WDW for $15K vs. $19K) on an exception basis, if you buy now!

After a certain point, there is nothing to dangle in front of the prospective buyer to induce them to jump.

As I told them, I was there for my "update", and specifically asking about new properties, future plans for the existing undeveloper properties and those currently under expansion, and to voice a few concerns about the program, etc. The saleperson clearly understood in 5 mins that there was zero chance to sell anything else, but the sales manager kept trying...

I do see some differences when traveling solo on the DH's points -- sometimes no Plat gift, perception of no upgrade, etc. I travel for work on my own so the Plat for me actually is a big deal. St Regis Dana Point here I come! :)
