I believe in science, trust experts, and have spent the past week self-quarantining and yelling at my kids to wash their hands. But I was still floored when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that gatherings should be put off until May 15. I am a small-business owner with roughly 75 employees. Like most of my business-owner friends, I had hope last week that we could all hunker down and get through this crisis quickly. But that hope has been extinguished by the restrictions on gatherings urged, and in some cases imposed, by the administration, the CDC and state governors.

May 15 is eight weeks away. How many of the officials setting emergency policy have ever run a small business? Very few, I suspect. To be clear: Two months is not a hiatus; it is a death sentence for small business.

Sadly, From my experiences, Governments have a disconnect from reality at times. One would think a business leader like Donald Trump would better understand this.

I watched an update from our Premier here in Canada. He was saying today we can expect isolation until the end of 2020?

8 months?

Could be longer because the latest reports state this virus is mutating. China apparently is getting a revisit wave from an even stronger virus.

If that happens,

If the virus doesn’t kill ya, the economy will.

My son was just told by his IT contractor that work and salary are now every other week and if they go code red, no work and no salary. His wife says she will have work and pay as long as the accounts receivable come in. If not......
Such scary times.

Hi TravelTime ,
If you could “ magically “ delay or remove all payments from your business - could you restart business
activity in approximately 8 weeks .
(ie) - will your customer base still exist ?

This reminds me of what my dad once said

“Always go into the food business because no matter what happens, you will always have a job and a need...”

Maybe he was right. I can’t see the grocery business closing no matter what happens.

Yes, I could. As soon as this is over, customers will return. The death sentence is due to not having business during the crisis.

I'm really grossed out by using the term "death knell" for a business when we are buckling in for massive loss of life.

And I suppose the length of time the business has to close?

Yes, the longer this goes on, the greater the death sentence for my business. I assume most small businesses have the same problems right now.

Sorry I can’t open your linked article but I found another article on the subject. Apparently the guidance does not apply to businesses.

That article does not state the virus has mutated. Nor does it state that “it’s even stronger”.

It does state that they’re seeing a second wave of infections from people returning home from overseas places where the virus is more active than in China.

All new cases in China are imported. They are quarantined so technically they won't infect the larger population.

Maybe. But it returns. And viruses are known to mutate.

We are talking about what you had posted earlier. All news channels are reporting no new cases within China and there were 34 people who arrived from overseas who were found to be infected.

It is what it is. These are extraordinary times - you can't push a rope. Business clients are distracted with higher priorities. So not going to worry about it.

I am going to ramp down expenses and then reach out to clients when the dust settles. In the meantime I am going to finish existing work, declutter my office, and tackle some home projects I never had time to do when we were traveling and swamped with work. Although our stock portfolio has been hit, we are close to retirement so have enough to get through this until markets recover.

yes, small businesses are having the same problems as you - depending on the industry
My son is a lawyer and even the courts have shut down but that 'business' will eventually recover, other small businesses may not

It nakes no sense to want the science experts you supposedly trust to ignore science for business reasons. That is selfish. Of course some businesses have to stop. Disaster affects businesses around the globe every day. 911 made disaster planning for businesses a key focus for smart owners.

We had to cancel our housekeeping service. Four Brazilian women who have been in this country for many years. Still, they live on money earned from job to job, home to home, family to family. We decided to pay them anyway and the response I got when I texted the owner was so heart wrenching that my mother and I had tears streaming down our cheeks listening to the her reply voice mail. We need to continue to support those small businesses if we can possibly afford to.

My Mom was asking the same thing- should she cancel her housekeeper or not? I told her to cancel. Like you, though, she’s going to still pay her, because she’s worried about what she’d do if everyone cancels their housekeeping services.

Not being critical, but this quote is leaving me scratching my head. Huh? Universities were the first to close. Schools are closed. What's the logic here?

I'll be honest, it is all super hard for me to wrap my head around. Of course, I want to limit the spread. I am super sympathetic to healthcare workers. Sheesh, if they get sick, what does it matter how many hospital beds and ventilators there are?

So many jobs are dependent on interacting with others. I work for a huge corporation in a large building. They are trying to figure out how to let us work from home, but, really? I don't have the internet service to the level we have at work. A laptop versus multiple screens? My iPhone? I wear a headset 10+ hours a day. LOL..laughing because really I am so grateful for so much.

I’m the same way. My housekeeper comes 2 times a week and is wonderful. She’s staying on and still cleans my house.

I think the premise of that article quoted in the first post of this thread is old and based on CDC guidelines that are already out of date. But as I mentioned upthread, the article is behind a paywall so I can’t read it.

If all of this seems confusing, it’s because it’s an evolving situation and there’s not really a strong coordinated messaging response at the national level. That’s improving but what you need is one clear voice at the national level, and then state and local messaging that’s coordinated with that national message. Everybody needs to be on the same page.

This is not the fault of the CDC. They are not the policy makers. They issue guidelines that have to do with public health. The folks who make/implement the rules are actually government officials.

Bottom line is: our government wasn’t prepared so it’s confusing. To some extent, it would be confusing regardless, though because of the evolving nature of the available info. I think our government is getting its act together and the response is improving, so I think things will become less confusing over time.
