Are you required to provide SSN for transfering ownership (buy resale TS etc)?

Resorts Owned
DVC at Hilton Head, The Colonies at Williamsburg, and The Grandview at Las Vegas
Actually my experience was mixed. For one ownership, I was asked for SSN and I gave it and for another I was asked for the last four of SSN and I just gave 4 digits. Now thinking back, I probably could push back and do not provide any. Anyone tried that and what was your expereince?

There is no need for or right to your social security number when purchasing a resale timeshare for cash.

I think it depends and if you bought on ebay or some other platform and they disclosed they will require it then they will. One of my HOA's required credit checks in order to transfer to the person that I was giving it away to. I don't think they were looking for perfect scores but they wouldn't transfer to anyone under 500.
You can always try to push back and see if they will let you refuse but it depends on how bad you want it. I think some 3rd party transfers require it because some resorts or resort systems require it and they don't want to chase people down if it is one of those resort systems. They ask it for all the info any of the systems may want rather than carefully researching each to see what each needs.

yah, I am with you 100%. Is it your experience or just opinion?

There is no need or right. However, the American population have been conditioned to hand it out to every one that asks without push back. . Now these resorts and management companies have made rules around requiring that you provide the number otherwise the transfer would not happen.

My experience is that the couple of times I was asked, I politely declined and the transaction continued (I don't remember the transfer agents involved; I would have been the buyer).

For New York deeds, one of the forms required for transfer ask for your full SSN (both buyer/seller). I sold one of my NYC deed to someone in Japan and transfer was rejected by the state when they left the field blank because they didn’t have one. Had to wait for them to apply for an ITIN at US Consulate in order to get it accepted by the state.

Also I’ve sold through Resort Closings and they asked for my SSN so they can issue a 1099 for the proceeds. LT Transfers didn’t ask for my SSN or issue a 1099. Maybe because I was under a certain amount or they don’t think it’s required.

such a hassel and werid NY state laws. I don't know if anyone really checks if just fill in 000-00-0000 to continue.

1099-S? Perhaps $600 is the cutofff. But I guess it's for SELLER, not BUYER.

5. A de minimis transfer for less than $600. A transaction is de minimis if it can be determined with certainty that the total money, services, and property received or to be received is less than $600, as measured on the closing date. For example, if a contract for sale provides for total consideration of “$1.00 plus other valuable consideration,” the transfer is not a de minimis transfer unless you can determine that the “other valuable consideration” is less than $599, as measured on the closing date. The $600 rule applies to the transaction as a whole, not separately to each transferor.

Just checked, it was a 1099-S. It was $4k through Resort Closing and $2.5k through LT Transfer. So LT should have sent me something.

I know when you buy a timeshare like villages, who uses DMR as their resort management they request your social. Are you saying you can just refuse to give it and it will still go through? I believe they collect it for identity since they will not allow an owner in default or who owns too much to go through.
