I'm wondering if owners of deeded Hawaii weeks, staying at their home resort are exempt from paying the Transient Occupancy Tax or a Transient Accommodation tax.

I would appreciate if Hawaii owners could comment on whether they have had to pay when staying at their home resort.

I pay it at Hilton. I wonder if it’s waived with Westin. We didn’t pay it on a tour package there.

It's not waived at any of the Hawaii resorts that I'm aware of. Definitely not at the Westin! In fact on a tour pkg. the fees are even higher!

In June we only paid for parking and tax on the parking fee.

If that's all you paid, someone made a mistake, because even owners pay the Occupancy Tax.

I think the OP is specifically referencing Soleil-managed properties. They do not charge occ or TAT for owner stays. Now RCI exchanges, I have paid. I assume Soleil is making a mistake, maybe, but I am always happy to not pay additional taxes. Our Hono Koa are $401 per week X 3 weeks.

He should clarify, but he has actually brought this up before. Westin definitely charged us.

Timeshare managers must pay a TimeShare Occupany (TSO) tax, non TS rentals pay a Transit Accommodation Tax (TAT). As I understand it, they are based on fair rental value and both are 3%, but not certain on the details.

Here is a link with info: https://www.hawaiicounty.gov/departments/finance/transient-accommodations-tax-tat

Also there is a fallacy that just because you own some property in HI, you are a resident. This is not true in HI nor all states that I know of. Regardless, as I understand it, even a HI resident that owns a TS must pay the TSO.

@TravelJoy - Can you be more specific please - exactly what are you looking for?

Every resort has different fees and they can vary widely. Exchanges have additional fees, and they can vary depending on the type of Acct. that you have and the resort.

If you are asking about the Hawaii Occupancy Tax, I've seen rates ranging from about $7 to $45. It's based on the maintenance fee, so basically, the nicer the resort, the higher the Occupancy Tax is.

We stayed a week at Maui Schooner in a 2 bedroom, paid about 88 for the whole week. At Hyatt our 2 bedroom was approx $37 per day. At Westin we had a studio so approx$ 5 per day

The TSO (Timeshare Occupancy Tax) is a percentage base off 50% of the maintenance fee of the unit being occupied. I want to think it is 10.25% of 50% of the maintenance fee, but I think each county adds an additional levy.

If you paid a parking fee at the Westin, then you didn't stay on a timeshare based reservation.

It was the 5 day presentation package. Paid 30 for parking plus 5 for valet. Says WVC marketing preview on the checkout invoice.

Yeah. Those shouldn't have TSO. It should be built into the price you pay for the packages. I am not sure what @DeniseM was referring to when she said "on a tour pkg". Perhaps the same thing, but I don't think there is a nightly TSO on Encore Package type stays. Though I could be wrong.
