And some people still think Apple only makes toys.

As more and more apps are developed for the iphone and similiar devices, the more valuable they become. Just a simple app like the restaurant.com app that I downloaded recently, will be huge when I'm in unfamiliar areas.

Funny thing is that Apple makes loads of cash and is one of the two largest companies in the world by market cap, but is only one better mouse trap away from being the next Blackberry.

I would feel scared having a large long term investment in a company that is so driven by the newest, latest and greatest technology. Think Wang, AOL, Compaq, Blackberry, Kodak, Yahoo, Dell, Boarders Books, MySpace, Nokia and Motorola. The list can go on and on. They are all a fraction of what they were only a few years ago.

I know that none of them has achieved what Apple has, but I'm just saying. Apple has a cash load of about $40B in America and another $60B outside of America. I would start buying some hard assets (like New York skyscrapers, Alaskan pipelines, or communications satellites) with that cash.

A company that wouldnt be around today if hadn't been bailed out in '97 by Microsoft.

Not true. But, given your current position, I can understand why you think so.

Remember, Microsoft at the time made huge profits on Mac customers (some may forget that Microsoft Word first appeared on the Mac), Apple and Microsoft agreed to end long standing disputes on IP issues, and more. The loan of $150 million was more symbolic than anything else.

I was in the audience at MacWorld 97 when Bill Gates appeared on a big screen reminiscent of 1984... It was quite strange, but the message was welcome.

And yet.....

“My primary phone is the iPhone,” Steve Wozniak says. “I love the beauty of it. But I wish it did all the things my Android does, I really do."

For perspective, iPhone sales were 8% of all handsets sold globally in Q4 2011. Leaders were Nokia (around 27%) and Samsung (around 23%).

Statistics are not helpful without context. How about some real perspective? Also, please post a link to these stats (where did you find them?). Somehow I suspect you're also comparing non-Smartphone phones in these stats, which doesn't really compare Apple's to Apple's...

First, I'm not alone thinking that it's rather interesting comparing one company's products vs a bunch of companies products. Apple has a history of being compared to operating systems, and not particular products, due to their closed system while others license (or, like Google, simply give away) their operating system. And, is global sales the only metric? Here's another viewpoint (there are many articles containing the same info from Neilson, this is just one):

http://www.forbes.com/sites/mobiledia/2012/01/19/apple-gains-on-android-with-iphone-4s/

In essence, these articles show that Apple's iOS is gaining traction and Android is slowing down. This year may be particularly interesting should this trend continue. Here's one quote from the article:

The 4S launched to long lines and record-breaking sales, capped by high holiday activations at the end of last year. The iPhone 4S accounted for more than 44 percent of December’s smartphone sales, just 2 percent below Android, indicating the gap between the two rivals is growing narrower.

That's simply because US consumers would not be willing to pay $1500 for a iPhone (what it would probably have to sell for if made in the US with our much higher labor and overhead costs).

So what's your point?

actually that not the main reason jobs gave. It was more about manf capabilities and the speed in which the plants can adapt to change..

find the story about the prototype iphone steve had in his pocket some 6 weeks before it launched. He pulled it out and told the engineering team the screen was crap.. it was scratched. he was telling about how people will put this phone in their pockets with change, keys etc. he did not want to put a product out that was not going to be the highest quality possible..

I was thinking the story was in the book about steve job i am reading but may have seen this another place.

Always so defensive.

I wasn't meaning anything by the post but to show that 37 million phones, while sounding like an impressive number, isn't all that many in the overall scheme of things.

The context of my comment is global handset sales (which I not so subtly hinted at when I stated "handsets sold globally in Q4 2011" ).

Always interested in accuracy. Note you still haven't posted that link. I also note you are always attempting to portray Apple as if they shouldn't be as successful as they are, or in a manner as to infer they either don't deserve it or that their products are inferior. A little objectivity would be great.

You asking for objectivity makes me chuckle. As for links, try Google.

I just knew you'd respond in this manner. Consistent to the end, eh?

I guess posting links is too much effort for you, as well. I posted one from Forbes, and you haven't even commented on it. Trying to change the topic from one of interest to the manner in which I respond, as you've done many times before. Frankly, I'm tired of it and wish you'd respond intelligently.

I've posted numerous times about my opinion of Windows. And of Apple. You again infer that I'm biased beyond objectivity, which my posts - in total - dispute. I've also changed my opinion based on facts presented in an intelligent and courteous manner. Sorry to say I can't recall a time you've been successful at doing that, though.

What's your point?

My initial post stands completely on it's own. 37 million units might sound impressive in terms of an absolute quantity, but is not that many in the overall scheme of things. For additional perspective, Samsung expects to sell 375 million handsets in 2012.

What about this is so difficult to understand?

Android gains more market share in top spot

Once again Android leads the pack both in growth rate and market penetration while all other except Apple continue to lose share.

Looks like Windows phone isn't going to make any giant leap to relevance as they are now steadily losing not gaining ground despite all the hoopla about rebirth. See the full story here.

I would rather have an Android, but boy does Apple have the ability to charge a premium. Right now they are a cash generating machine.
