We got a flyer on retiring to Robson Resort Communities and they have some around Tucson. They are between 2,000 and 3,000 ft. altitude, so I'm wondering if they are a little cooler in the summer than one would expect. They look really nice and we're keeping our minds open about possibilities for retirement in about 3 years.

A useful rule of thumb is to expect a decrease of 5 degrees F in temperature for every increase of 1000 ft in elevation. Typically Tucson is at about 2000 ft above sea level, whereas Phoenix is about 1000 ft, which is the reason that Phoenix is generally hotter than Tucson in summer.

So, in summer you should expect 3000 ft elevation to be cooler than Tucson, but it is still going to be hot. However, it is a dry heat.

We live in dry heat in the summer now, but it rarely gets over 90 here, although I teach about 3000 feet lower in the high desert and it gets over 100 there sometimes. Of course, here we also have cold, cold, cold and snow, something I would not miss.
Thanks,
Liz

Liz,
If you wouldn't consider living in Las Vegas because of the weather, then you probably shouldn't consider Tucson either. We live just south of Las Vegas in Henderson, and have friends who live in Tucson. We live at about 3200 ft. I don't know their altitude. Our weather and theirs is comparable in the summertime, with theirs being slightly higher. They are also warmer in the winter, if that matters.

Warm in the winter would be a plus. I like the pictures I have seen of Tucson, not having been there yet. I am not a Vegas person, no interest in casinos and bright lights, so I think that would be one difference for me between the two places.

Liz, why not just move down the road a bit to the Palm Springs area?

Winter temps there will be better than high desert temps. Of course there's that summer sun to deal with, but you would have that in AZ too! :)

Liz,
I'm not saying you should move to Vegas (or even Henderson), but surely you know that there are whole neighborhoods where there are churches, schools, doctors' offices, supermarkets, and malls, with not a casino or bright light to be seen.

Fern, I know those neighborhoods are there, but I'm not sure what sort of city type activities there are that aren't in Vegas. We haven't really explored the area, so maybe we should do that, also. I seem to have no real direction when it comes to moving: Ashland, Oregon to Mountain Meadows, North Carolina, Tucson, Palm Springs, Long Beach area, etc. I'd really like to go to the retirement planning weekend in Ashville, NC, but not this year, as we won't have our extra day off at Memorial Day, because we have already used up more than our 4 planned snow days.

Saddlebrooke

We just bought a house in Saddlebrooke (a Robson community) which is about 45 minutes north of downtown Tucson last June. We had visited a couple of times, had old neighbors who settled there, and really liked the area! It does get hot in the summer and they do have a monsoon season with thunderstorms in the afternoon (usually July and August) - but not every day! It is, for the most part, a dry heat - we were there this past year from April through August and will stay longer this year!

If you have questions you can email me privately - I'd be happy to talk to you about the area!

If you want to know more about Henderson, take a look at the city's website. Turn up your speakers and hear our mayor. Click on video message. We love living here.:)

Robson in Eloy

Robson Communities are pretty good in Arizona. I know this one very well, due to a legal dispute concerning whether either Eloy or Casa Grande could benefit from the increased tax base. Robson developed Sun Lakes south of Chandler and IMHO it is just as good or better than the Sun City developments. Then there is Eloy. It is an old farming community with charm that many who have retired there do not like. Casa Grande next door has many restrauants that are lacking in Eloy, and as many foreclosers. Overall, I would stay in California.
