Anyone know the history of Barony Beach?

Just got back from HHI - stayed at the Westin Resort - in the middle of the Barony Beach Resort. Was the Westin once a Marriott Hotel, or was Barony Beach perhaps a Starwood development? Just curious...

neither.
The Westin hotel was originally the Hotel Intercontinental, and was the largest hotel on HHI (still is). It was never owned by Marriott.
Barony Beach Club was constructed by Marriott in late '90's, after Grande Ocean's huge success, and is broken up into two distinct sections because of the way the property came available. Barony's "Garden units" were built and sold first as "phase I".

Yes, the Westin has been a Westin since before Barony's days. And Barony was developed as a Marriott timeshare resort, not as a Starwood property.

Of the Marriott beach properties, Monarch has been around for many years, having been built in 1981 and acquired by Marriott in the mid 1980s. Grande Ocean followed in the early 1990s, with construction continuing until about 1997. Barony came next, built (mostly) in 1999. SurfWatch was the most recent addition. Those last three were all Marriott projects from the outset.

Thanks for the info

I walked the Barony beachside property but not the gardens... The back units beachside don't have much of an ocean view.
