My son wants this for Christmas (he's going to pay part of the cost and I'll pay the bulk of that cost). He does take pictures for the paper he works for and may go on to graduate school in journalism. I'd like to know what others think if they are using it.
Thanks,
Liz

Liz,

For more information, I'd go to http://www.Photo.net. It's a site similar to TUG for photographers and they have forums with some really great advice.

I have a friend who started with a D70, then upgraded to a D100, and now has a D300. He swears by the Nikon digital line, and takes some amazing pictures. If you get the D90, your son will receive a great camera. Just be sure he gets high quality lenses for it.

It's a good camera, but pro it ain't :( I have no doubt it will do the job required at present i.e. photo-journalism course but it wouldn't be rugged enough for true pro use.
Comparatively small files and only 4.5 frames per sec could be limiting in time.
If he fulfils his ambition to go pro then that will be the time to worry about the spec. In the meantime it won't be a problem.
