I made an offer thru Timeshare Adventures. They advertise no closing costs with their "platinum" listings, which mine was. They asked for a $500 check over the phone or to be mailed to them. Today they asked for my social security number. Is this legitimate?

You made an offer to purchase? Did you receive a contract in writing first before sending them money? I think if you have doubts right now, I would stop payment on the check if it has not cleared and take your time to do some research.

They are very, very, very slow!!!

I made a purchase thru Timeshare Adventures earlier this year. It was a Worldmark membership. Usually those take about 2 - 3 weeks to consumate. They took over 3 months. I only did it because their price was really cheap. Everything went thru fine, and I did have to send them a $500 deposit, which they deducted from the purchase. Everything was OK, just really really slow.

Okay, I called my bank and they said they can put a stop payment if it comes through with a check number, but not if its just an electronic debit. Timeshare Adventures did ask me for a check number, so presumably it will be used. I also e-mailed Timeshare Adventures with my concerns, and haven't heard back from them all day. Possibly they are, as stated above, just really really slow. I do want the timeshare cause it was a really good buy, so hopefully we can work this deal out if its legitimate.

do you know who you are dealing with???

If they are a licensed real estate broker in their state, the deposit goes in a safe trust account. Check the state website for where they are located. In general I wouldn't have a problem with giving a licensed real estate broker a deposit for earnest money pending closing.

One or two of my owned resorts have tried to get my social security number out of me through the years and I've refused to give it up. Unless you are financing something, I see no valid reason to give it to them.

The resorts claim they are required to have it in case I rent my unit. I tell them if I ever decide to rent through them, we'll talk.

Personally, I'd be concerned about how it's going if you don't have a purchase agreement to justify the deposit.
