I am considering dropping my direct tv and not getting a tv provider to replace them.

Put a HD antenna in the attic, get a Tivo and sign back up for Netflix.

Anyone else quit paying for TV

Not me, but a friend of mine has. She has been very happy with Netflix. However I haven't talked to her since Netflix raised their prices.

I dropped satellite about two years ago. I couldn't justify paying for it when I was out time sharing so much. At one point, they'd put your service on hold for free, but the last time they charged a small fee. I get enough with my HD antenna in the attic and internet downloads.

I haven't but my DS & DD both have....they use HULU - somehow have their computers hooked up to the TV's

We haven't had cable since 1997, when we moved from an apartment where cable was included in the maintenance, to a house. We used broadcast and now we have converter boxes with our old TVs. A couple of years ago we got Netflix and we love it! Now when we go on vacation and turn on the cable TV, it seems like there's nothing we really want to watch.

God bless you all. I would love to, but not sure if we would survive it.

We dropped sat tv a couple of years ago. Went with a HD antenna. I think I watch more tv now than before.

I dropped it when Comcast went to Xfinity and wanted me to pay for each box. Honestly I don't miss it. I get regular ol crappy TV and it's pretty much just background noise. I'd much rather hang out here on TUG or do other internet stuff.

I'm in TS's so much that if I really wanna catch up with Cable shows I've got something to look forward to in the evenings now. :D

I dropped cable tv completely about 8 months ago. I have a UHF & VHF HD antennas along with two boxee boxes (boxee.tv) and a roku box (roku.com). the boxee box plays local video and internet shows (nickeloden, mtv, hgvc, and others) & apps (netflix, pandora, vudu, and others) and the roku does netflix, amazon vod, & hulu plus. Between those two I can get any tv show anytime (some free, some from subscription, some on demand/purchase).

I have the apple tv and can get netflix but i cant get current TV without paying itunes prices and they are high.

Would the boxee or the roku be a better addition to apple tv?

Can't do it. I like CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, FOX, FOX Business, etc. and all the sporting events I can't get over the air too much to switch. I'm currently happy with DirectTV just as I was with FIOS before I moved.

We never have been on Cable/Satellite and have exactly what you are considering...over the air HD TV & a Tivo box. There are a few channels we don't get like Fox News, MSNBC, History channel.... but with the Tivo & netflix we have far more TV offerings than we have time.

It's extremely rare that we watch live TV. Here's something relevant I spotted on Yahoo today:

yes. Apple TV is probably the most limited as far as to what apps it does. You need to research where your shows are playing to find the best match for apps.

1. Do they publish their shows on their network sites then go for boxee
2. Is it available via hulu plus, amazon prime/vod then go for roku (but it costs monthly)

Of course if it is on netflix then your covered by all three (apple tv, roku, and boxee along with wii, playstation, xbox 360, your blu-ray, etc...)

good article

Not until I can get all live sports off the internet.

Article is interesting but not applicable in many situations. I own some of the items and think they were a great buy. Still waiting to get a pool. As for cable TV, I went off the grid years ago. Currently I get over 50 channels with my small digital antena and use Nerflix streaming for movies. I do miss CNN and FOX news but do read their websites daily.

Following advice from the article, I tried accessing ESPN3 over Time Warner Cable Internet today. No Go. The "Watch Now" link on the ESPN3 website runs a redirect back to Time Warner for user authentication. After logging in, I was told I did not have a proper "cable TV" package to support viewing even ESPN3-level content.

It took quite a bit to convince my husband to give up our cable TV package two (?) years ago. We've easily "replaced" any content we could want except Monday Night Football. Still working some resentment on that front ...

No way...I can't live without it...Especially this time of year...DTV has NFL Ticket.. It's a MUST!!!!
Die-hard COWBOYS fan

I must confess that it has been difficult this week to not have cable. Our Brewers have finally gone further than ever before, but the games are only on TBS!

It has been nostalgic to listen to the games on the little radio we have, though!:D
