I am planning to replace my computer and have been copying files to an external hard drive. Is there a way to just move my email address book to the hard drive? I was able to copy the addresses to a file, which I moved to the backup, but I'll have to put them all into the new computer manually. I'm looking for a way to just move them to the backup and then move them back to the new computer.

Just send everyone an e-mail

and include a copy to your self. when you come back up open the e-mail and click reply to all and send . that just worked for me to get my e-mails from my home pc into my new laptop .

Two very simple steps using the Address Book export and import features built in to Outlook Express.

  1. In your current computer, open your Address Book, then click on "Export" from the "File" dropdown menu. Select "Address Book (WAB)", and pick a file location on your network or a disc from which you can retrieve the file in step 2.
  2. After installing Outlook Express in the new computer, open Address Book on the new computer and reverse the process using the "Import" option from the "File" dropdown menu.

But if you're migrating to a new computer, I would think you would want to move all of your files and settings to the new computer, not just your address book. In that case, you should be using the "Settings and Transfer Wizard" to transfer info to the new computer. I'm pretty sure the Wizard will transfer the Outlook Express address book and message store to your new computer, as well as everything you have stored in My Documents, your desktop settings, your browser favorites, shortcuts, etc.

Thanks for the help

Makai Guy, I tried your recommendation, but my computer just would not provide the file name no matter what I did. I got nervous about digging deeper into the computer.

Beanie, you had a novel approach, but I didn't want to bother my addressees.

T R Oglodyte, I did what you recommended and have an exported address file in the external hard drive. Now whether or not it will import into the next computer, that is the qustion? We'll see after I get the new one hooked up.

I want to thank you all for your assistance. As always Tuggers have the answers. It's good to be a part of this organization.

Without opening your address book or contacts, select "Import and Export" from the File dropdown menu. That should open the "Import and Export Wizard".

  • from the first view, select "Export to a file" and click "next"
  • next view select "Personal Folder File (.pst)" and click "next"
  • next view select "Contacts" from the Outlook folder view and click "next"
  • next view browse to where you want the file to be saved for later retrieval and give it the name you want (but keep the .pst extension), and click "Finish".

On the new computer open the Import and Export Wizard again, and use the Import options.

me too, but need to load Windows 2003

I'm ready to copy (import) the address book file, but I have Windows Proessional - I need to load Windows 2003. I have a CD containing 2003 but am not quite sure how to go about this - how do I load it and will it wipe out anything else that I have?
