We will be arriving on Kauai on Sunday for a 6 day stay at Kauai Lagoons. Has the island recovered from the heavy rains last month? Has it been rainy this week?

We will be staying in a 2 BR OF. Is there any particular unit we should request?
Anything else we need to know?

Looking forward to our stay!

We just got back from Kauai. The weather was very nice while we were there. Mid-upper 70's and very sunny. High UV index (11+) so make sure you prepare accordingly. Didn't stay at the Kauai Lagoons so don't have any comments regarding the tmeshare.

We had a two bedroom oceanfront in October of 201o. We loved our view, especially since at that time the golf course was being renovated, and we had more water and less red soil. At that time, only building A was open (they may have given names to the buildings by now, but it was the first of the three buildings to the left facing the buildings from the street)

We had a ground floor villa, which had a totally unobstructed view of the coast, harbor entrance, and golf course, and we liked having the lanai area extended with a private lawn beyond where the balconies on the upper floors would have reached. If I can dig out our trip folder, I will add the villa number to this post.

I did post a resort review here on TUG and may have mentioned it there. We felt the view was one of the most spectacular we have had, and the quality of the villa the best. It is possible some of the landscaping, which was beautifully done, may have grown up enough to make the ground floor villa views less spectacular, however I think they planned for that with plants that could be regularly trimmed back.

Although Waiohai is still our first love, Kauai Lagoons was a great week as well.

Just got back from a 7 night stay at Kauai Lagoons. The weather forecast said showers the whole week and we had nothing but amazing sun instead, even as the online forecast kept saying showers or at least scattered showers. We saw some of the most beautiful weather on the north shore that we have ever experienced on Kauai and other than a couple of single lane traffic areas where they were doing road repairs everything appeared to be back on track.

We stayed in unit 1414 (ocean view 3 bedroom) and I highly recommend it. In fact, I think it was the best view in the entire complex, and I could not see much if any difference between ocean view and ocean front. All the units face the ocean and you get a beautiful combination of mountain and ocean views.

I think you will have a great time at Kauai Lagoons. The units are the best I have stayed in at any Marriott property with a lanai that opens completely up, wall to wall, with your living room. The grounds are well kept and there are lots of great areas to take a walk nearby and the proximity of Lihue to both the north and south sides of the island make it very convenient. You can also take the shuttle down (every 5 minutes) to the Kauai Marriott. Kalapaki beach had the best atmosphere and body surfing waves of anywhere on the island during our week there and we went several places (e.g. Poipu, Hanalei Bay, Tunnels, Anini, etc.).

Update: I think this link will get you to a flicker page I created with some photos from our trip:

Kauai Lagoons impressions

We have booked a three bedroom Oceanfront for 2013, but a relative gave us some poor feedback. She has not been to the Marriott resort, but has been to Hawaii over 20 times and likes this island the best.

Some comments were: windy because of the location [high outcropping]; very close to the airport; "abandoned" developement nearby on the road in; no direct beach access; no nearby shopping.

Then I look at the resort page on my-vacationclub.com. WOW, the place looks beautiful [I have never been to Hawaii]. I love Lakeshore Reserve, HHI, and Canyon Villas - Lagoons looks better than them. It seems that there is a Ritz Carlton Destination Club as part of the overall property and I noticed on one map that this resort was labelled as a Marriott Grand Residence. If true, the area cannot be too shabby.

The Ritz Carlton description was very appealing [e.g. Lagoon water taxi, etc.]. I am a bit puzzled by the reference to Marriott Grand Residence.

Based on the previous posts, I cannot imagine why we should not take advantage of our three bedroom reservation.

Can someone provide some insight re the Ritz Carlton and other amenities on the property? Any bad vibes?

Thanks, David

Marriott's original master plan for Kauai Lagoons included Ritz Carlton Club, Grand Residences, and high-end private home sites.

However, the down economy hit the Ritz Carlton brand especially hard, and the decision was made to scale back the project and sell them as Marriott Vacation Club instead. That is why you will experience such large units with all the high-end features (SubZero refrig, etc).

Although Kauai Lagoons is still listed on the Ritz Club website, it seems that most of their original plans have been shelved.

Regarding the lack of a convenient beach, a salesperson told me that the Ritz demographic are not beach-goers and would rather sit by a beautiful pool and sip drinks (sounds exactly like something a salesperson would say, right?).

I also heard that early purchasers at Kauai Lagoons (under the old weeks program) were given phenomenal incentives (free golf for two years). I'm sure those incentives are gone now with the introduction of the new points program.

My guess is that the Marriott has been quite disappointed in the Kauai Lagoons project from a financial perspective. Ritz Carlton had some spectacular plans for Kauai Lagoons in the beginning, and paid handsomely to acquire the land. That property has a long history of financial problems under previous owners (Chris Hemmeter and others). Grand plans abound, but nobody can seem to make it pay in the end.

You are 2 minute shuttle (comes ondemand) from KBC and the beach..you can't use the pool at KBC... The 3 bedrooms are stunning..see my thread 25th anniv. You have great access to north and south part of Island... If you pm me your email, I will send you pictures...
