Looking to purchase a more powerful camera for out upcoming China trip and had pretty much settled on going back to the SLRs...Canon's Rebel XSi. At Fry's today we saw the SX10 IS and were very impressed. Have spent the last hour or so on-line doing reserach. As this is a brand new camera, I'm unable to find any user reviews or ratings.

What appeals to us is the lens range without the inconvenience of changing lenses as with the SLR. We like the wide angle capability as well as the incredible optical zoom.

Is anyone familiar with this camera or its predecessors? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I have not looked at the new Canon superzooms SX10 or SX1 but I have the predecessor model (Canon S5) and use it a lot. The new models get good comments on www.dpreview.com/forums For the money I think superzoom cameras are the way to go, especially if you're traveling light - telephoto, macro and video that fits in a belt type pack. (no backpack of lens!) You may also want to consider Panasonic's newest superzoom type camera - FZ28, it's got good reviews.

Thanks Brett. Great site. After perusing it a good portion of this morning, I have pretty much decided to go with the SX10. The convenience of not having to lug around extra lenses sold us :whoopie: .

Two of our other digital cameras are Canon, so we decided to stick with the brand.

I just bought the Canon Rebel XTI but haven't used it yet. My former coworker swears by it. I dropped my Sony a the balloon festival and thank goodness it was under warranty and I exchanged it for this as the Sony was cheaper now and the Canon was the same price and got great reviews. shaggy

The SX10 it is. Just picked one up and can't wait to use it. Turns out DH's coworker has the S5 and loves it. He says she drooled when she found out the SX10 had a 20x optical zoom!

I'm a photography noob ... really! just goes to show what a decent P&S zoom camera and a little Photoshop skill can do. but for really good photos check out the favorites on www.flickr.com/cameras pick any model camera and you can find a good artistic eye even on cell phone cameras. some day I may take some photography courses and get a dSLR but now it's just for fun

Brett,

I also enjoyed the pics. Page4 titled parade brought back memories of my father. He too was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus. Thanks for the memory.
